My D is auditioning for them in January. She participated in their shadow day in October, and though it was chaotic in its administration, she loved the classes, students, and teachers she came into contact with, and it is one of her top choices. I know they’ve had their first audition of the year, and I was wondering if anyone here had a D who participated? Just wondering what to expect in regards to whether everyone performs their solo or if there are cuts, and the if decisions come out after each audition or at the conclusion of all three. Thanks for any insight on the audition process or the school!
My daughter’s good friend from high school is currently a sophomore in their BFA program. I know she really enjoys the program. She was in Europe this summer doing something with the dance department and had a really good experience.
I know her only complaint about the school is the social aspect. I know she had a nice group of guys and girls and quite a few of the guys transferred out this year. I don’t remember why, but she was a bit sad about loosing a chunk of her friends group.
Thank you for sharing! My daughter is a pretty extreme introvert, so I don’t think a social scene is even on her radar- it’s good to know there is high turnover though.
Daughter sent all application materials to the university in early October, and submitted pre-screens last week for the MT program. She is wondering what the process looks like, is the considered for the college first and then the specific program, or just straight into MT and decision comes from there…
@msullivan my daughter was told that decisions are combined- you get into the school and the program at the same time, or rejected from both. Decisions for dance are said to be made within three weeks of auditions.
Thank you -that is helpful, I wonder if pre-screen’s work the same way as far as a timeline goes, from what she understands she cannot register for an audition unless she “passes” the pre-screen.
@msullivan I’m not sure about that as dance doesn’t have a prescreen process, but they’ve always been fast and happy to answer my D’s questions, so it wouldn’t hurt to email them.
That’s not quite accurate for the musical theatre program. Over the last five years, there have only been 1-2 people leaving the program per year. In each case it was health-related or a change of heart about this career path, which we fully supported in each case. As for the university as a whole, yes there is a fair amount of turnover.

We had a record number of pre-screens this year, so we are quite a bit behind. We have been doing as many as possible each day; our apologies for the delay. @milgymfam - the full faculty audition team watches everyone dance, sing their two cuts, and do their monologue. We also ask if they have any questions for us so we get a chance to chat with them. Since we all watch the whole process, we make decisions as a team taking the big picture into account as well as individual scores. Decisions are held until the end of the audition season. If a clear picture of our needs emerges along the way, we may make cuts earlier. I hope that helps.

My apologies, I thought I was in the musical theatre forum and just realized this is dance. So please, ignore what I wrote above. Good luck to all!
@VoiceTeacher thank you for trying to help! Sounds like it’s a bad year to be applying to MT, chances wise, but it was interesting to hear how it works there- and more interesting to see that the different departments handle things so differently. Have a happy new year!
