Sherlock holmes movie and book

I will pose my question first.

To the readers of the books,
how did the movie compare. what aspects of the movie were enhanced because you've been reading the books, was the movie blasphemy? anything else, comments...., and how did you like the movie?

To the passersby
how was the movie? what did you like, not like, comments....yadayada, how did you like it?

To the readers who object to see becaues of blaspemy
Why? Explain yourselfs

Anyone else
Please comment

So i saw the movie about two weeks ago. I've read about half of all the sherlock tales sir arthur conan doyle produced, and i do love the series. but when i saw robert downey jr was going to be holmes i was ****ed. and when i realized that his task was to save the world i was also nonplussed. but after realizing that movies must be made in such a way to get the dough at the box office, i put this bias behind me (do we ever put biases and prejudices behind us?)

So onto the movie

I loved how they (although seldom) referenced the other books while engaged in conversation. I did enjoy that. I was a little upset about how they "urbanized" his deduction skills with fast cameras and faster camera angles, but what can you do? (shrugs shoulders) The ephasizing of illegal boxer was too much. They should have emphasized his morphine addiction, ha!

I did not care for the action at all. I'm a drama and suspense guy. The oldies are dear to my heart but all the action was to much for me and messed up my pacemaker (jk).

One thing which puzzled me is that the audience could not understand the british dialect (not figuratively, they couldnt understand it!!) I love old british sit coms so i have a leg up, but around the comedic sections, the majority did not laugh at the jokes because they couldnt understand what was being said.

Rant over. its your turn

I’m the passerbyer

Personally, I thought the movie was great. It was classic entertainment to me. The movie just had that feel to it ya know? Um I don’t know what was wrong with the audience you saw the movie with but during my movie people laughed at all the jokes and I understand what they were saying and stuff. Although Brits have different dialects I do not find the language to be all that different. Who cares if it’s trousers instead of pants and lift instead of elevator it still makes sense; I hate how people act like it’s so extreme. ha ha

I really enjoyed the film and thought the acting was great. And the relationship between Homes and Watson was tangible and I love it!

I loved it, but a few lines were lost on me when they were talking too fast in the accent. I think once in the beginning and once toward the end I had no idea what they said and my friend didn’t either. The rest of the time I was okay.

I dunno, I just thought it was really funny. It was just my sense of humor. I am not much of an action person, but I enjoyed that aspect of this movie, too. I walked in with virtually no preconceptions, though, as I only just got the books a few months ago and didn’t get to read them before.

I am reading the books at present so I can’t compare the two yet, I just so happened to collect it a while before the movie came out and am just now getting to it.

I like how they referenced Holmes’ analysis of the pocket watch when they were trying to figure out where the dead midget lived.

quick whit! just how i like it

I enjoyed the movie, probably because I’m a Chemistry Major and like Victorian settings. My knowledge of Sir. Doyle’s work isn’t very extensive but I bought a compilation of his work several years ago and read one or two stories but can’t remember much of them.

^ what does being a chem major have to do with it? i’m one too and I like victorian settings…I’m going to see it monday

I want to read one of the Sherlock Holmes books - anyone want to suggest one for someone who hasn’t read them before? is it a chronological series?

Have seen Avatar (*), Up in the air (Very good), Sherlock (), Nine (), will see Victoria today.

My favorite is…Sherlock holmes movie - Waiting for Part 2.

Alix- you must read 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" easily one of my favorites. Its relatively short as well.

I really didn’t think Up in the Air was going to be that good but it seems to be pretty well liked. I wanted to see it just because anna kendrick is in it. XD Hopefully I will get a chance to see it.

I’m an avid past reader of the books…

I enjoyed the movie for what it had in terms of humor and action (although I thought the action was WAY overdone, tbh), but I still prefer the books.

They somehow managed to capture a likeable parody of Sherlock Holmes, which while not quite being the actual Sherlock Holmes I fell in love with (see Jeremy Brett for that one, rawr! ;P), he was exciting and enticing in a similar way…just less himself and more like…House, maybe.

Overall, I was disappointed in the lack of adherance to the books, BUT believe that as just an unattached movie, it was quite good…almost reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp, in that regard. ;P

I actually did comment during the movie that it was basically house with a cooler accident. Hugh Laurie should use his normal accent. nods

Ohhh Johnny Depp. I have a lifesize cardboard cutout of jack sparrow in my room at home. I am not embarrassed.

I’m a big fan of both the movie and the books…the movie was different, but in a good way

Update:
Sherlock (*Super)
VictoriaVery Good)
Avatar (Very Good)
Up in the air (Very Good),
Nine (**Good)

My favorite is…Sherlock holmes movie - Waiting for Part 2.

It’s enjoyable for a Chem major because a large portion of the plot revolves around Chemistry, it isn’t amazingly accurate but it’s sort of neat to me because of the way it falls into the plot.

To add to that, Sherlock Holmes was introduced to Watson while working in his chem lab. For some reason, every time I see spookyjeff he/she (I think it’s a she) has mentioned he/she’s a chem major. I have no idea why.
Also, not that most of you don’t already know, but House’s character was inspired by Sherlock Holmes.

I talk about it probably more than I should :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Also I usually lurk around threads where one’s area of study is of interest.
