I've tried calling the financial aid office, but haven't been able to get anyone who's able to confirm or deny that SHIP is no longer included in financial aid calculations.

They have always included SHIP health insurance under my net cost, and have given financial aid for it. But it this year it's not included in net cost.

Hoping that they'll add it back, since I haven't been notified that SHIP isn't covered under financial aid anymore; and I would rather wave out instead of paying an extra 1,600 per year for insurance I don't even use...

Finally got through, the woman at the financial aid office said something along the lines of “everything that will be included in the financial aid package is included, if health insurance isn’t there, it’s not included anymore.”

This is so stupid, they didn’t even tell us health insurance is no longer included as part of the financial aid package. That’s an extra $1,700 I didn’t budget for, and if I waive now, it will cost me a $50 dollar late fee penalty.

I’m hoping this financial aid lady is incorrect and the package will be adjusted after they confirmed who is and who is not enrolled in UC Ship…

I had the same issue and emailed the financial aid office a week ago.

“Your current financial aid did not account for SHIP coverage. Your
package will increase by the 5th week of enrollment if you do keep SHIP.
The award to cover SHIP would pay to your CARS account afterwards.
Sincerely,
FASO-R-LZ”

Seems kind of silly since I don’t have the money to cover SHIP upfront and now I might be assessed late fees. I emailed them about that, but they’ve yet to respond. At least I have SHIP covered.

Wait so are they going to give us FA for SHIP…? If I knew they weren’t going to give us FA, I would have waived for a cheaper plan… I’m confused…

I’m not too sure. The lady on the phone didn’t specially say for certain, just that what ever is on the net costs is the only thing included.

However in the past, additional financial aid was given to those who enrolled in SHIP.

However, in the past, “health insurance” was listed under “my net Berkeley costs” with a statement saying that if you choose to waive out of SHIP, the amount will be deducted from your student budget or if you remain in ship, additional financial aid will be given once the waive deadline has passed.

This option is no longer under my net cost for 2012-2013. You can see for yourself if you compare your 2011-2012 net costs and 2012-2013 net costs @ myfinaid.

Not really too sure, but all I know is that I’ve already been billed for SHIP on my CARS and it has been paid off by my CAL/Pell grants which means I’m netting out less than I expected for off-campus apartment because it doesn’t appear any financial aid will be given for SHIP, although I hope I’m wrong.

Has anyone have a follow up on this? I have EFC 0 and in the previous years, SHIP was covered by FA. But it does seem like it is not this year, as it is not listed in the Net Costs section. I’m going to waive it. I rather save the money going towards SHIP and just pay the $50.

It’d be so messed up if they are doing this to us… I feel like emailing them does nothing since I tried doing that last year and they never gave me a for sure answer… I just went with the flow since most people said that SHIP was 100% free for EFC 0.

Ok that’s good, I thought they decided not to give me any money :/…!

I think we should get FA late this month or early next month.

On another note, did they send you a new anthem blue card? Or do we use our old one from last year? I’ve been thinking of going to minor hall for new glasses, but I’m not sure if we need the new ship card…
