SHIP waiver denied

UC Berkeley just denied my SHIP waiver :(. EFC is 0. Is there opportunity to receive extra aid?

You can probably appeal that decision, so you should look into whether or not that’s possible.

But if your EFC is 0, Berkeley should be offering you money for SHIP. UCLA did that with me and I assume it’s the same for all UCs. If so, it won’t be so bad that you’re buying this with money given to you from the school.

I got denied my SHIP waiver also. I think a majority of us did, lol. I wanted to appeal but someone on Facebook said that financial aid would cover SHIP if our EFC is 0, like Cayton mentioned above.

I don’t have anything on my FA that says it will cover SHIP and my EFC is 0. I’m confused… :frowning:

Well us bruins got it covered ;-)

In my UCLA FA, there’s a specific grant to cover SHIP. If I waive the coverage, that grant goes away. You may want to call your FA office to find out if the coverage had already been factored into your aid package.

Did nobody else see Melody’s post about SHIP?

Lol, I had this issue when I was trying to figure things out for Berkeley. They beat around the question and couldn’t tell me if they are going to give reimburse or when they would.

From what I’ve read, they usually do, but you get stuck paying upfront.

Financial Aid for SHIP will come in September.

@loyshi who is Melody and what did she/he posted?

@calbro good to know! Did you get that information from the FA office?

In the Free & For Sale page in Berkeley Closed Group, Melody make a post about how to answer SHIP questions to get your waiver approved.

I transferred into Berkeley last semester and my insurance originally got denied, but after making several calls with my insurance company, and the insurance company actually speaking to the University Health Services directly I was able to waive. But since it was not initially waived I asked about financial assistance in paying for it, and they just suggested emergency loans, if federal student loans and awarded grants/scholarships were already exhausted.
Whatever your financial package is, is most likely to not change if you enroll in SHIP or not. This is only my experience, and the only times I saw my financial package change was when I changed my housing option. Keep in mind that the original financial package when first admitted assumes that you will buy the insurance.
Completing their waiver was pretty tricky because the worksheet that you can fill out prior tends to word questions differently compared to the actual waiver online. Most of my friends opted out of the SHIP because of existing coverage and the cost, but it is still a decent insurance plan if you don’t have any.
I’d recommend contacting financial aid, or Cal Student Central and asking about any additional financial assistance because every student’s situation is quite different. CSC will be your best bet by email, but they may take a few days to get back to you. Do it ASAP though so you’re prepared.
