Hi-
I found out yesterday that I am invited to the Shipman weekend for U of M in three weeks. But I have a state Mock Trial tournament that weekend on the Saturday and that I can't do both. I am the captain of the Mock Trial team and I have huge parts on the team. I would let down my entire team if I quit. But the Shipman scholarship is a huge honor and $30000 minimum (can be up to a full ride). The financial aspect of the scholarship is not the biggest thing; I am more concerned with the honor and prestige that comes with the scholarship. If I choose to attend Michigan (haven't heard from other colleges yet), will it be a huge privilege to be a member of the Shipman Society? I don't know what I should do. Any thoughts?

Conflict…It’s just my opinion, but I would say in this case (no pun intended) the opportunity to interview and compete for the Shipman scholarship would take precedence, if you are seriously considering attending U of Mich. Your loyalty and commitment to your Mock Trial team is admirable, but I’d be willing to bet the other members of the team would agree that you should take the opportunity to attend the Shipman weekend and let someone stand in for you at the Mock Trial. If you pass up that opportunity and potentially lose Michigan as an option, I think you’d regret that decision more than you’d regret “letting your team down”…which in this case you absolutely would not be doing. Good Luck!!

D1 was a Shipman scholar 4 yrs ago. If you want to change your profile to accept PMs I will give you some input.

Thanks for the replies. Entomom…I have allowed PMing in my profile.

How do I prepare for the Shipman Weekend at U of M? What is the group discussion/interview like? What do they ask?

this should be a no brainer… there is no way that mock trial is worth 120 grand. unless you aren’t considering michigan whatsoever, skip out on mock trial and go to the shipman weekend.

Congrats on your Shipman invite!
May I ask what your UW GPA/SAT/ACT is? (I’m a Shipman hopeful too :))

Conflict, it sounds like you’ve decided to attend the weekend. If so, I think you’ve made the right choice!

The group discussion is intended to be a more relaxing partner to the real interview, which you’ll go to with the same group. The interview questions won’t be technical (this is not Microsoft), but they can range from personal to philosophical. Writing your college essays was probably pretty similar to what you’ll have in the interview. If you get nervous, just remember that you’ve already won a large scholarship and that the University likes you and really, really wants you to choose them. It can be tough to keep in mind, but the weekend is more about recruiting students than anything else.

As for preparation, I would get a good idea of things you want to see or know about before you get to Ann Arbor. You have a short opportunity (better than, say a Campus Day) to explore the campus and hear from the faculty, administration, and current Shipman Scholars what Michigan is like, so make the most of it and have fun!
