Hi there! I’m an enrolled Computer Science major from Jackson, MS! I was wondering if anyone knew how feasible it would be to ship my belongings to Marist when it’s time to move in? I plan on taking the train, so I can’t take everything with me. If it’s not feasible, I may just buy everything while I’m up there.
Hi! I’m a current Marist student from Chicago and I’ve shipped items before and taken the train from Chicago to school. As a freshman, my family drove out to Poughkeepsie to move me in. Every other time, I have taken the train or flown out here. When moving in, I ordered items from Bed Bath & Beyond - such as bedding and a fan - and picked them up at the Poughkeepsie location. I’ve also shipped items to Marist that wouldn’t fit in suitcases, but it gets a little pricey sometimes.
When taking the train, I use 2 large rolling suitcases and a back pack - the train staff doesn’t weigh items and they aren’t that stirct with luggage, so use that to your advantage! Pack your suitaces as full as full as possible. The Poughkeepsie train station is about a mile away and there are always taxi driers waiting at the station. Estimate about $5 for the ride.
During the summers I store my stuff at a family member’s house and many other students use storage units - there are many locations to use that are very close by. Hope this helps!
Hi! I am also a current student here at Marist from Ohio. I would say the easiest way to get your things here is to drive. I know it is a super long drive, but you could always make a fun road trip out of it! There is so much that you need to bring your freshman year and once its all here, you will never have to worry about moving it around again!
If driving is not an option, then I would recommend some of the things ckollar said. We actually have a post office right on campus, so you wouldn’t have to leave campus to get the things you sent. I have a lot of friends from California that didn’t really buy anything before they came, and just went shopping when they got into town.
I definitely recommend utilizing a storage unit over the summer, that way you aren’t transporting your belongings back and fourth every year. There are a ton of kids that are also from far away, so you can share a unit with more than one person!
I hope this helps some!!
Hey I am also a current student at Marist! I am from Denver, Colorado and went through the same stress you’re going through now about moving your stuff across the country in the fall! I have a few other ideas for you about what I did when I moved here freshman year.
Over the summer before my freshman year, I used to Bed Bath and Beyond’s pickup program. I went to the Bed Bath and Beyond near my house and bought everything that I needed in regards to my room (bedding, pillows, lamp, hamper, etc. The store has lists of recommended items) on a little scanner. They send that information to the Bed Bath and Beyond in Poughkeepsie (a 10 minute drive from campus) and I picked everything up there. It was super easy and I didn’t have to worry about lugging all of that stuff across the country! It was just ready for me to pickup in New York when I got here. This may be possible if you or one of your parents can rent a car when you get to school to move-in and you can just make the quick trip to Bed Bath and Beyond to grab everything.
Over the summer, instead of renting a storage unit, I use a storage company called Dorm Room Movers. I didn’t have a car my freshman year so I didn’t want to have to worry about moving all of my stuff from my room to a storage unit. Dorm Room Movers sends you five huge boxes to pack up your stuff for the summer, will come to pick up the boxes at the end of the year whenever works for your schedule, and dropped all of my stuff back on campus when I returned in the fall. For me, this cost less and was a super easy system (considering I didn’t actually have to carry any of the boxes!).
I hope this helps and I hope that you have a great end to your senior year!
