Shipping boxes of stuff for move in day?

My daughter will be a freshman at Elon in the fall and we're trying to decide whether it'd be better to make the 15-hour drive or to simply fly down for move in day in August.

Does anybody have any experience with shipping boxes of stuff in advance? Is there a safe secure place we can send a couple of boxes to and then pick them up when we arrive on campus?

Thanks.

Kierans: you will get move-in information in June or July; if my memory serves me correctly, students are limited to 2 18x18 boxes that will be stored for the week before move-in (yea, not much)

Someone on the 2015 parents thread discussed an alternative option we never explored but you can; if you ship from a UPS store to another UPS store, they apparently will hold your shipment until you pick up…

We used Wal-Mart ship to store feature for the fridge and memory foam mattress topper. They would have held the items for 30 days. There are 2 in the area so be sure to pick the one that is closest to the school.
Bb&Beyond is also close by and has a similar program.

Someone over on the Alabama forum just posted this company…honestly, have NO idea about it, but it may help…

Elon is listed…

Thanks very much! This is all great information. I think we’re going to fly down and do some combination of shipping and pick up in Burlington.

Just from past experience you may want to purchase dorm items from BB&B, Wal-Mart, JC Penney online and have them shipped to store. If you wait until you get there to shop you will find that your selections will be limited.

There are a ton of stores in Burlington. And practically everyone you see shopping in Target will have on an Elon shirt! I agree that purchasing in advance and having items shipped to the local store may be your best bet, but you can certainly pick up odds and ends when you arrive.

I think when my daughter moved in 2 years ago there was a limit of 3 boxes that could be shipped to the Elon post office and held, but that may have changed. We had a LARGE box shipped (ordered a futon from Target) and the post office had it for us when we arrived.

D 's roommate shipped 3 boxes packed jammed w her clothing. the drag is that then you have to carry it across campus (once you park your car you don’t move it & the dorm was far from parking) & maybe up 3 flights of stairs on a very hot & humid day! If your dorm is far from parking you are assigned a location to go to temporarily park & university golf carts will bring your stuff up to the front of the dorm.

All the incidentals can be bought in the nearby big box stores. only thing is maybe the preferred comforter will be sold out.

Get comfortable with Amazon prime for free shipping of stuff-- My D & I go virtual shopping. She texts me she has stuff in her cart & I pay for it & check out. She gets it in 2 days. She orders special food products so it works out well. Saves me a trip to store & post office.

Maybe rent a car to drive there & you fly home…
