If I'm shipping stuff to arrive on the 19th (moving day), do I have to wait at the entrance to my dorm all day waiting for the UPS guy so I can sign for my packages?

no. usually the ups guy will leave it at your dorms main office and the person at the office will email you telling you you got mail. they might go to your room if you specified a room. but most of the time they don't.

just leave a note that anyone can sign for and it will get delivered. alternatively, mail stuff to your pobox and it can sit there for awhile if you don't feel like moving it in on the first day (yeah, i'm lazy and did this...cause i lived 5 minutes from the post office and couldn't be bothered to carry heavy bags on the airplane)

when do we find out what our po box is?

^I think early september

^i found mine earlier than when they said they were going to post it last year. Log onto axess, click on "personal info", then "addresses", then click "change a future address", then click "change current mailing address", and you should see your P.O. Box number if it's up. i found it about a month before they released them to us formally last year. so if you really want to know, check that every once in a while.

thanks current_student! they're up now!

no prob........

If I remember correctly, freshmen are not told their room number until they arrive. I think you should still be able to tell UPS to send the packages to Cedro, for example, and the UPS person may leave the boxes inside and ask a random person to sign for them. Kind of sketchy, but it happens. Alternatively, you could wait all morning I guess =p I have never seen UPS go away and take the package with them if they couldn't find the receiver; they just leave the package somewhere for you to find later.

Ok here's my story:
I want to buy an HP online and have it shipped directly to Stanford. Now do I have to wait until I get to Stanford to order it because I don't know my room number or is there some other way?

http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/shs/contacts.html go here to find the contacts for your dorm. I would advise asking them what to do.

^i second that. i wouldn't risk it with a laptop.

Thanks but alas the problem just got more complicated. After asking in notebook forums I've found out that HP freuquently delivers before the expected delivery date and seeing as it can't get there before I do I'm simply going to order it during orientation (ideally sept 19).
Thanks anyways!

^yeah mine came in about a week early. but i ordered it and recieved it while still at home, so it didn't matter.

i would suggest not waiting until the 19th though. hp might not have the same deals it has now and your price might change. it COULD go down. but it could also go up. i remember last year i kept going online everyday and checking the order i had saved it would be a different price some days b/c they would change the rebates or offers. just keep that in mind.

also, why don't you order it now and have it sent to your house. and if it comes in before orientation, then great. if not, then have your parents send it to stanford when they get it. this way you don't have to wait an extra 3 weeks for it, which is what you'll be doing if you wait to order it the 19th. you'll get it sooner even if it doesn't make it to your house on time.

Thanks! Unfortunately I can't order it right now (I would've if I could) because I live overseas and HP won't deliver. Its a 5-7 business day delivery and it usually seems to come before 5 days anyways so I'll wait.

^ah...ok. i thought you were in the us. i'll shut up now.

Hahaha
No I really appreciate your advice, you've helped me a lot, really.
