Well, I have taken students of both sexes to college. The usual load is:

Guys: enough clothes for a week (winter clothes can be shipped later), computer stuff, including cheap printer, speakers for music on computer, a TV (unless roommate bringing), computer games and system, shower/personal hygeine stuff, some laundry cleaning stuff (likely never to be used), tools (hammer, scissors, pliers, screwdrivers and some nails and screws), a hand operated bottle/can opener, at least two alarms for waking you up (one is not enough), some books and pictures if desired.

It's damn funny thing that college dudes cannot wake early.

But what I am interested in is how much is a winter jacket, boots, mittens and other winter clothing gonna cost in the states of the East Coast? Because I am right now considering whether to take mine from home or buy once I am in the US.

Based on what I saw at move in day at USC several years ago that is exactly what happens. A lot of very sheepish, exhausted fathers of freshman females after that day.

If your jacket is very toasty, bring the one you have. Good quality winter coats range from 50-100+ dollars, depending on the brand and the amount of warmth you require.
