Shooting at Univ. Alabama Huntsville (merged thread folds in Parents Cafe comments)

*Pistol marksmanship isn’t a genetically-linked ability … it takes practice. *

True…but I don’t know enough about guns to know how accurate you have to be with a 9mm and you’re sitting right next to and across from your targets. The victims were “sitting ducks” and completely caught off guard.

She may have waited until everyone was distracted when she pulled out the gun and started firing.

I don’t know what the topic of the meeting was, but I do know that fall assignments are decided at this time. Many schools have posted fall schedules online with “staff” written in the area where the prof’s name will be. Now is the time that depts are deciding whose names are going where. It makes me wonder if fall assignments were being discussed and perhaps she wasn’t going to get any classes (was she considered to be fired at the end of this semester? )

That came from an unnamed investigator. So the source wouldn’t even go on the record. Presumably they needed a warrant to get the information on the computer and the couple was removed from the suspect list after that. How would you like all of your kids’ pictures splattered all over the internet as the result of an investigation that found nothing?

When I travel by plane, I bring along a computer with nothing on it as your computer hard drive can be imaged by airport security if they want to. I just download the software that I need to do my work when I get to my destination. The problem of airport officials seizing laptops and then not returning them is an issue for corporate travelers.

She didn’t get tenure at the end of last school year, so this was her final year at the university, her time to look for another job.

Murdered or killed , that was kinda the whole point of my post. Again, I wanted to see how she described the shooting in her work of fiction. I was hoping her description of the shooting, the events leading up to it, and her flight to avoid arrest was detailed.

True, but it a marriage where one partner is troubled or mentally ill, the situation often develops over time. Gradually the moods of that person begin to dominate the household, until it is almost like the weather. There can be a major degree of self-blame by the partner. Sometimes the partner eventually realizes that the way they are living is NOT normal, and that other people do not put up with this kind of behavior on the part of their spouse, and that they did not in some way bring this on themselves or deserve it. Before that realization downs, the partner might well have said “s/he seemed fine” when the illness/problem was obvious to outsiders.

Regarding the “husband” story: yes, it would appear that she was an unmarried 20 yr old and simply made up the husband story on the spur of the moment. What struck me was that she made up such an excellent story, calculated to garner instant sympathy and support. She may have must shot her brother, but on some level she had her wits about her.

Mom2: I’m glad that it sounds as if your friend will be able to make a good recovery, despite his injuries.

Thanks…I wasn’t sure if a prof could continue on a “non-tenure track” or something. I don’t know how the whole tenure thing works.

BTW…what is an adjunct prof?

Too much speculation going on. Also, what was the point of identifying the present residence of Bishop’s parents?

An adjunct professor is usually someone who is hired on a contract basis to teach a class or supervise practicum students, etc. They are not typically fulltime faculty and are not on a tenure track. Some adjunct professorships are courtesy titles or honorariums, with no associated pay.

Even if what one is living with is not normal the vast majority of people who have mental illness are not going to go and kill someone. I have known some very strange people in my lifetime (and some may say the same about me ) and had a family member with severe mental illness (made our lives pretty miserable but never physically hurt anyone). None of the crazy people (by my judgment) I have known have killed anyone. I I’m not sure at what point one would judge that a family member or an acquaintance had crossed that line other than them coming out and saying they were going to kill someone (and even then if they have made empty threats in the past).

As the old saying goes, Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Thanks…

However, I do know a full chemistry prof at UAH, who is also an “adjunct prof” in the bio dept. I was wondering if it just meant that he was “on loan” or doing two jobs ???

^^^He might have an interest in the kind of research going on the bio department and find it useful for grant purposes to establish a formal connection with a bio department. I think it is more common for that kind of relationship to be described as a ‘joint appointment’, though.

Ahhh…thanks! :)

Good explanation, midmo. I suppose its also possible that the professor might be teaching a class, perhaps on a one time or limited basis (maybe covering for someone on sabattical), in something like psychopharmacology or biochem or something, where it might be helpful to have a chem faculty handle it (especially if they are shortstaffed in the bio dept) but the class is offered through the bio, not chem dept. So the professor whould have an honorary appointment in the bio dept and teach the clas through the bio dept while still being on staff and in the budget of the chem dept. Make sense?

mom2collegekids - my prayers and best wishes go out to your friend for a quick recovery.

This is seriously bizarre. From the paper she published:

The address for Cherokee Labsystems is a private home. Apparently she and her husband had this “company” out of their home and “employed” their children.
Hopefully, the husband has been questioned thoroughly. He was questioned along with her during the bomb investigation and they were apparently dating when she shot her brother.

I think it’s fortunate there’s some documentation of a murky/dark past. Otherwise, I feel the media would haved hyped this up more as an example of severe work-related stress, rather than the faulty wiring and sheer craziness of this woman.

I agree with the posters who have been saying the H must have been either seriously clueless or in denial.

My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this tragedy.

(thanks for placing this thread in a central location)

ALthough I realize that the cat is out of the bag, I think that we should refrain from repeating or further publicizing the names of minor children who were not participants in this crime.

Are Andrew or Elizabeth 2 of their kids, or possibly the H’s parents, or is one house their residence and one the business address/lab?? Andrew and Eliz. Anderson are listed at 2006 <<<streetname omitted=“”>>> (along with some people with the last name of “presto”), whereas the professors are listed at 2103. Or it could, as NYmomof2 suggested, be coincidence…</streetname>

I don’t mean to reopen a can of worms, but if this nutjob didn’t have access to a gun, a lot less people, if any, would have been killed.

What would this old nutty brittle women have done? Lunged at someone with a knife? That’s one person dead, tops. Then I’m sure some man in the vicinity would have punted her across the room.

Someone joked about molotiv cocktails or homeade bombs, but honestly, that takes a whole lot more dedication and premeditation, and can fail a lot more easily. Look at Britain - it’s all knife murders. Obviously limiting guns will not prevent capable people from killing - but it will prevent some — old nutjobs like this and kids under 16, for example - from exerting deadly force as easily.

“I don’t mean to reopen a can of worms, but if this nutjob didn’t have access to a gun, a lot less people, if any, would have been killed.”

Well, if the rumor about her allegedly being involved in a pipe bombing is correct, the lack of a gun may not have stopped her. She would have found some other way to exact revenge, the gun just made it easier.

minor addition: adjunct designation varies greatly between colleges and universities.
One can be an adjunct prof at another university.
For example, chem prof from Uni X (where his salary is paid), may be an adjunct at Uni Y The adjunct designation may indicate to grant agencies his formal commitment and involvement in research at Uni Y. Man of us when we leave on good terms from one University for opportunities at another, retain our association with our former university in the form of an adjunct position.

At other institutions, this designation is used for non-tenure track teaching faculty.
