Do you think he will be able to tap dance as well as Charles Durning?

That is a bizarre story. I wouldn’t think most people who “accidentally” shoot a relative react by running out into the street and pointing the gun at other people.

I wonder if this story will inspire a future “Law and Order” episode.

I bet very few people outside of Massachusetts ever heard of Braintree before today. Now it is likely to be in the national news for a week. Braintree is a middle class suburb south of Boston. Boston media is confirming that her mother was a town official at the time. Any bets that there will be a book written about this incident? The Braintree connection seems to have the potential of being a huge scandal.

As always RIP to the Huntsville victims, and her brother.

One story I read suggested she had requested advice from her mom about how to unload the shotgun. Huh? What the heck was it doing loaded in a Braintree house anyway? And why would a noobie be trusted by mom to unload it while pointing it at her bro’s gut? Mom then witnessed the fatal “accidental” shooting. Then Bishop runs out of house with the shotgun pointing it at a passing car? And is arrested at gunpoint? Uhhhhhhhhh…even if it was a single shot killed her bro , that just don’t sound quite right to me. And I know a good bit about shotguns.

(If it was 3 shots- and I haven’t seen that except on this thread …well. Somebody up there has a helluva problem.)

BTW, if this was on a Law and Order episode : mom didn’t want both her kids taken from her and made up a story that accomplished that.

Weird. I had exactly the same thought about this being a future Law and Order episode, and about the mother’s motive being that she didn’t want to lose her other child after losing the first.

I had the same thought- obviously driven family. She was at Harvard (20) and he was an accomplished violinist.

So by covering for her daughter, Amy, the mother is indirectly responsible for the Huntsville murders. This professor clearly had some mental issues, even back in 1986.

Regarding the “three shots,” and naming some names:

There’s also a story that the then-police chief is denying a coverup, denying everything.

I don’t know anything about shotguns, but I didn’t realize you could “accidentally” discharge one three times, one after another.

I wonder if that driver she threatened is still alive and hearing this? If so, hopefully s/he will come forward. It has been 24 years but if someone pointed a shotgun at me I would still vividly remember it.

If this scenario plays out, charges should be brought against the mother (and the father who had to have known the whiole story). To hell with protecting her daughter and family.

Not a pump shotgun. The action of “pumping” is what moves the shell into the chamber on the down stroke and ***** the weapon on the upstroke, readying it to fire. ;)

That’s scary to think a DA and police chief would just cover this up, that there wasn’t a greater outcry at the time.

MA has a bit of a reputation as a place where justice is a little different if you’re politically connected.

Welcome to the world of Massachusetts politics!

From wikipedia.

Leading a motion to censure your university’s president is not the best move politically for an untenured, assistant professor.

"Amy Bishop shot her brother in the chest in 1986, Braintree police Chief Paul Frazier said at a news conference. She fired at least three shots, hitting her brother once and hitting her bedroom wall, before police took her into custody at gunpoint, he said.

Before Bishop could be booked, however, the police chief back then called officers and told them to release her to her mother, Frazier said. The shooting of the brother, Seth Bishop, was logged as an accident, but detailed records of the shooting have disappeared, he said.

“The report’s gone, removed from the files,” he said."

If they had followed through all those years ago, maybe more people wouldn’t be dead today. :(

Those poor teachers. Not to mention their families. I can’t even imagine how shocked and horrified they must be.

If there was a way to look at the family’s financial records, I wouldn’t be surprised if there probably was a substantial withdrawal (or similar) after the brother’s death.

More weird stuff is going to come out…

She sat in the meeting for quite a while, before she began shooting.

Then she threw away the gun in the bathroom and called her husband to come pick her up (he works at UAH also).

Reports are that she has 4 children… Does anyone know if all the kids are from one marriage?

I wouldn’t think most people who “accidentally” shoot a relative react by running out into the street and pointing the gun at other people.

You’d also think that someone who accidentally killed her own brother would be too distraught to continue with her studies and get a PhD.

Mom2 - how is your friend doing?
