I just realized after looking at the AFROTC site that the Type 1 scholarship our ds was awarded is basically an unlimited amount of money for tuition and fees. Other than the USAFA, the only school ds applied for was Texas A&M.

I’m sitting here realizing that he could have applied for more selective schools and that it would have been paid for with this scholarship! I guess I am a pessimist, because I had no idea that he would be competitive for that level of scholarship. We never even thought to apply for the higher end schools!

Anyway, I post this to encourage those juniors out there not to underestimate yourselves. Go ahead and apply for a dream school (well, we know that the USAFA is your dream school, but apply for another one, too). You never know…it might work out!

I thought s was for son.
COngrats, not many at all get the non tech type 1. What were his basic stats? A couple of juniors i know want to apply next year and wont be doing a tech degree.

Ds is "dear son". I guess the abbreviations vary depending on which forums you hang out on. :-)

Here are his stats:
SAT 1370 (he took an SAT prep course which helped his score a lot... www.testmasters.com )
GPA 3.84 (unweighted)
Homeschooled, so no class rank
36 credit hours of dual-credit courses at community college
Very high scores on PAE
Swam on USS swim team starting in junior year; worked on family farm and started his own exotic wildlife business
Toastmasters, 2 years, served as president, earned bronze award
Attended summer seminar
CAP - Mitchell Award, squadron XO, honor cadet at one of the activities

That's pretty much the basics. He interviews well too, I think. Also, I'm thinking that although his chosen major is non-technical, since it is International Studies focusing on North Africa, that probably would be a bit more desirable of a major than, say, English.

With those scores I definitely think that he would have been competitive else where. I'm seeing more and more that I'm not the best applicant out there but I got an appointment offer early - I'm guessing that they liked ALL the activities that have taken over my life. I guess it's too late now though.

USAFA sounds like it could be a really good choice but Texas A&M is a good school too. Timely - I'm also in CAP - it's a good program for getting jump started into the AF (in my humble opinion).
