Shortened Schedule

I'm going to be a senior this year so I decided I would have early release everyday. Instead of having 4 classes a day, i will have only three classes. I chose to have less classes because I took ALL AP classes. No regular classes at all. Will a shortened sschedule with all AP classes be a negative when colleges look at my app?

Yes, I think they would rather you take 4 APs rather than 3 APs and a release. Or even an honors or elective to fill that fourth spot.

would it be too much? I would rather have more time to focus on learning 6 classes well rather than struggling in 8. : / And i really don’t want to take a few AP classes and a few regular classes. (equaling 8 classes)

Oh, how much of a negative effect will a shortened schedule have on admissions?

If you don’t take 4 classes, then you will be rejected from most 4 year colleges. It shows that you are lazy. You’ll be condemned to a crappy unknown school or community college.

srsly? : (

I didn’t know it was that bad. A lot of juniors/seniors take early release in my school…

Oy vey. First of all, what caliber school are you shooting for? Ch1ck3n is… don’t even listen.

Are you going to get into HYPS with only 3 classes? No. But what are you shooting for?

See if you could get an “independent study” or something for that 4th spot. You could use it as a supplement to your AP classes (bio lab for example if you’re taking AP bio). I only technically had 5/6 classes my senior year because I took an independent study. I didn’t get rejected from any of the colleges I applied to.

No, not seriously. 6 AP classes is a large workload, more than most students take on as it is, and I think that as long as your grades are good, an early release shouldn’t be much of an issue.

I’m thinking of volunteering at my local firestation.

And yes, i am aiming for HYSPM

Ok, in that case, you definitely need a fourth class of some sort. Although, either way, it is a crapshoot into HYPSM. If there is truly nothing that fits your interests, look at a CC or local university and take either online classes or regular classes.

: /

I wish my schools regular schedule was just 6 periods instead of 8 now. : (

Although, i think you should know that one girl in my school went to Cornell with just 6 AP classes.

I really thought schools would want substance (6 APs) over quantity (more filler classes)

If you take a class you are interested in, it is not a filler class. Just because it isn’t an AP, doesn’t make it any less of a class.

I understand. But the problem is, if I take more classes I may not have the good grades that are necessary. After all, like Mike said, 6 AP classes equals a huge workload.

Ok, specifically, what does your schedule look like? Is it 3 AP classes a semester? Is it 6 a semester? Are they all year-long classes? What AP classes are they? Give us more details in order to help you.

My school has block schedule. “A” day and “B” day. Each class is 90 minutes long. I will have 6 APs each semester.

AP Econ and Government are semester long classes.

Including the above, i will be taking:
AP calc BC
AP Physics B/C
AP Art Drawing
AP Chemistry
Ap eng Lit

Ok, see if there is any way that you could get an independent study chem lab or something. If you have a cool chem teacher, he/she might let you just use the period for independent study and it will not look like you just went home.

Also, how many years of a language did you take? Ivys like to see you take language all 4 years unless you APed early.

I took three years of French. Can’t do AP for 4th year b/c not enough people have signed up for class.

Ok, then perhaps independent study for French. Anything is better than just a hole in your schedule.

How exactly do you do “independent study?” Do you just crack open books that are related to the subject? And how do you document this study?

Each school is different. At my school, we needed a teacher and we made our own lesson plans and our teacher monitored our progress.
