Shortlisting colleges with a 31 ACT

Hi, so I’m an international student and I recently started looking into colleges- UCs, NYU and some others in Florida. I have a 1960 on the old SAT also. No subject tests but a 4 on AP micro and a 3 on AP macro. For ECs I am in the school choir, library council and have significant community service and internships.
Thank you in advance

Also, do you think I have a chance at UChicago or CMU? I plan on majoring in Finance.

I could chance you on UChicago and CMU. Your chance (and mine since we have the same ACT score) is limited to none. You would have to write remarkable essays to people that read some of the best college application essays in the entire country. NYU is a good low reach or high match. You could get in with great essays and if you have a higher GPA than average since your ACT is average.
What type of feel are you going for in a college? Like Urban or Rural. Large sizes or smaller schools. and would finance be your major to all the colleges you would apply to?

@UofMichigan1999 I really want sort of an Urban area, not sure about the size. I’m willing to compromise on the major a bit as long as it’s related to business/economics.

@Arushi1811 try the Supermatch to try to get an answer. It will do a really great job and that search is very thorough. Tell me what you get and then from there, I could try to figure out which ones you have a shot at. Seems fairly straightforward, right lol? Hopefully, you get results and that it works. If you are unsure about the criteria, pick a school that you already have on your list and play around with it will the match is over 90%. Then look at the similar schools that are similar percent matches.

@UofMichigan1999 I got UCLA, Tulane, BU, Brandeis, CMU, NYU and northwestern. What’d you think? Could any of these serve as my safe colleges?

Definitely not safeties. BU actually might be a safety but not too sure. I think Tulane, NYU(excluding stern), and Brandeis are matches but CMU and Northwestern are reaches imo.

I only know four schools in your list (UCLA, CMU , NW, and NYU) and none is a safety for you (actually all are, more or less, reaches!)

Just as I have cautioned people to not assume schools are safeties even if one has scores above the 25%-75% range, the converse is also true: if you demonstrate a great amount of knowledge of and interest in a school, you can get in with test scores that are lower than the 25%-75% range. Only in the rarified world of CC would you be discounted for so many of these schools with a 31 ACT, which is not shabby by any means. You are an international student, so by definition you bring something interesting to the table. Thoroughly research the schools you are interested in, go out of your way to show interest, and you have a chance at several of them. Of the 8 schools mentioned here, it is definitely worth focusing in on one or two of just about all of them and really laying it on thick with (sincere) interest and knowledge and seeing what happens. Best of luck to you!

Safeties first and foremost need to be affordable and your stats need to be near the 75th percentile. Is $55K/year for UCLA affordable? Is $75K/year for NYU affordable? As stated above in several posts, you need to do further research.

How much will your parents spend each year? You have some expensive schools on your list? Will they pay $55k per year for a UC? Will they pay $70k+ per year for NYU?

UChicago probably has the best Economics department in the world, but it does not offer undergraduate degrees in finance.

Also be aware that the University of California schools admissions profile can be misleading, because they emphasize grades and class rank over test scores. Berkeley and UCLA pretty much require a perfect GPA with a lot of rigor.
