Should a Pre-Med major join a Sorority?

Hi! I’m going to be a freshmen this fall at a state school and I’ll be majoring in biology pre med. I have thought of rushing and potentially joining a sorority. However, I really need to concentrate on my studies to apply to med school afterwards.
I don’t really know a whole lot about sororities and especially the academic part of it. I think it would be fun to join one, but i don’t know if I would be able to fulfill all the duties as a sorority member while doing well in my pre med studies.

It is possible to do both but there is no one answer for every situation - it will depend entirely on the demands of the rush period, the sorority you join, how difficult you are finding classes etc.

I had a lot of friends who are pre-med and/or science majors who have rushed and joined a sorority, and it is definitely possible! Chapters have mandatory GPA requirements, group study hours, and academic resources available to members. Being pre-med in college (from experience) is about balance. You can have fun and be involved with greek life, clubs, etc. and still put time and effort into your academics. Does your school have rush in the fall or spring? If they offer both, I would possibly consider spring rush that way you can get settled in first semester and have an idea about what your schedule will look like. Being in a sorority is time-consuming, especially during the new member initiation period.

Yes as long as your grades don’t suffer

I would join one. When I was in a fraternity in college our national chapter held leadership events that were very useful. Also you build a very large network right from the start if you join greek life as a freshmen.

When I joined as a freshmen I had mandatory study hours and also I took part in a lot of the school-sanctioned activities which helped me meet people. When I needed advise on something I knew I could turn to the older people of the house to help me out and then when I was a senior I helped mentor the younger ones when ever I could.

I have lots of doctor friends who were in fraternities and sororities in college…in fact, I think MOST of my friends who are now doctors were in Greek orgs in college. LOL. As mentioned, it’s all about balance - you might consider taking a reduced courseload during the semester of your new member period and making it up over the summer or in a later semester; you’ll have to limit the other organizations that you belong to or other responsibilities that you have. But it’s definitely possible.
