Hello, I am currently a freshman looking to transfer for my junior year. Arizona State happens to be on the list of schools. But recently, found out how huge of party school that is and I am a shy reserved person. Would this school be a decent fit? Are the kids really that snobby? I was looking at staying on the main campus but if admitted and decide to attend I might just head to the west so I can have a small atmosphere.
Is there anything else I should know about for the school?
SN: Major is Computer Science or Informatics. And I will be an Out of State Student. (east coast)
That is an old reputation. These days, several Ivy Leagues post well above ASU on the list of party schools. I mean, if you look for the party, you’ll find it, but there are also plenty of students focused on their studies.
@daxx123 Yeah I noticed but I am assuming that they get a pass because they’re ivy league. But I really did get some bad reviews on the school from former alums.
My D is a reserved, serious student and partying by other students has never been a factor in her experience. I would put far more weight on what kind of educational experiences you want.
How important is class size to you? Do you like to be in interactive classes or are large lectures ok?
My D is graduating with a CS degree on the Tempe campus this semester and large classes in CS is the norm, even for upper level. You can check the classes at all the campuses here (or search ASU class schedule) and enter CSE for the Computer Science classes on the Tempe/Polytechnic campuses and ACO for the Applied Computing BS offered on the West Campus.
West has smaller classes but I would be concerned that there doesn’t seem to be the senior level courses that an employer for CS graduates would be expecting to see. Informatics is only offered at the Tempe campus.
You can find all the ASU major maps for Tempe/Polytechnic/West here
@STEMFamily I would be uncomfortable by larger class sizes but it’s nothing I won’t be able to get use too. So would I be able to live at the west campus but attend classes on the Tempe campus since my major is not available at the main campus? Also, I heard that a degree from ASU is only valuable in the west is this true? I would love the interactive classes as I feel I learn best that way. But I can be ok with large lecture; as most of my classes are lectures but they’re mostly small classes.
@goatstudios23 You are allowed to take some classes at Tempe. However, if you do ACO on the West Campus, that is the only place the required classes for that major are held. I don’t know if there is a residency requirement (ie required number of hours on that campus) in addition to that. At least as important is that the commute time to and from the West and Tempe campuses is 45 min to an hour each way by car so it isn’t very practical even if it is allowed. Close to 2 hours by a complicated combination of public transit for which some parts may not have the hours you would want. There may also be ASU busses that make the trip but I would suggest looking at the hours.
I think it is more that most of the recruiters that come to campus to recruit will be from the West. Doesn’t mean you can’t apply any where in the country. You do well and I think you would be marketable with a CS degree anywhere. I’m still not certain about that ACO degree though.
