Should he bother applying?

My son has applied ED to Amherst, because he really likes it and feels he has a shot since they invited him to their diversity weekend. He really likes Brown as well, but thought he had no chance so did not go ED. Now he thinks he might not get in early at Amherst because a lot of other kids from his school are applying as well. If he is turned down by Amherst, does that mean he has no shot a Brown RD which has a lower acceptance rate? Quick stats: Puerto-Rican/Irish American from NY suburb, middle class, selective HS, 93% unweighted, SAT CR 770, Math 690, average EC’s, also volunteers and works apart time job. Any thoughts?

Yeah, definitely.

Lower acceptance rate isn't everything. Brown and Amherst aren't necessarily looking for all the same kinds of people. There's no reason not to apply if he likes Brown.

You'll get in Amherst.

He's definitely getting into Amherst, so dont' worry about it.

Amherst is pretty selective (you guys might be thinking about UMass Amherst, which is easier to get into than the liberal arts college with the same name). I wouldn't bet on it.

No, I mean AMHERST. URM with 730.

Yeah, I know what he's talking about. The combination of his race, sat score, and applying early = acceptance.

Amherst is VERY tough. And so is Brown. But it looks like your son has a good shot at Brown. For the record... I got into Brown but did not get into Amherst. In my opinion, Amherst is a tad more selective than Brown.

Amherst is a lot smaller. It also takes kids who would never get into Brown, as they need athletes.

We are really nervous about Amherst because there are at least 4 other kids from his school applying, with better stats and with hooks. But Amherst did invite him to their diversity weekend, Brown has not sent him any mail. So you think if he gets rejected at Amherst, he still has a shot at Brown?

Hispanic is not a bad hook.

Idon't know if it will be enough.I guess we will see. Brown never sent him much mail, that is why I fear that if Amherst turns him down, so will Brown

Hi Chammom,

I have a son at Brown. They are not big on sending much mail, in my recollection. They really don't need to. I bet your son will be accepted to Amherst, but if not, definitely give Brown a try. It is a fabulous place.
