Should I apply for honors college?

I am a recent CC graduate with a 3.4 GPA. I could’ve left out with a 3.6, but I messed up my last semester and got lower than what I could’ve. I plan on transferring to a school to continue my communications and media major.

One of the school I’m applying to has the option of signing up for their honors college. Should I apply? My main motivation to attempt applying is because I tend to take the easy way and I want to push myself, but at the same time, if honors is completely unnecessary I don’t want to sign up for it.

I have the writing ability and have no problem writing the additional essay for the application, but at the same time, I don’t think applying for honors college is necessary and may serve as nuisance that will add more stress upon me and lower my GPA. Also honor courses only apply to general education courses such a science or history? There won’t be honor courses for my major electives, right?

Every honors program is different. Some have heavy requirements, including a thesis, in order to graduate with honrs. Some just require you take a few honors classes.

The benefits vary greatly as well. In some schools there isn’t much benefit at all. Others may offer early registration, smaller classes, special enrichment activities, more opportunities for research, and so on.

Honors is never “necessary” - it’s something you should do if it appeals to you and the program is a good fit for you. You can always apply and if you decide it’s not for you decline if you are accepted. Also many kids drop out of honors programs. Just make sure there’s no problem meeting requirements if you do drop out of honors - at some schools general core classes are different between honors and regular degrees.

You can always accept, try it for a year, and then if you don’t like it, stop. If there’s Honors housing and priority registration you’ll have benefited from two big perks most freshmen wish they had

Thank you, appreciate the advice very much. I do want to apply for honors, but I do have ADHD (I understand some people think this is a fake disease. I don’t know, but it is hard for me to stay focus in a traditional student environment). The perks of honors sounds great, but at the same time, I don’t want to be relying on ADHD meds to get through college (which I most likely would if I get into the honors program) because I realize the obvious dangers of that stuff.
