I am Canadian and I'm applying to both Canadian and American schools. My aunt is an admissions worker in a Canadian University, and she keeps reminding me that I haven't applied for housing in one of my Canadian choices yet.
I had always thought I should apply for housing only after acceptance, and this blows me away. Do I have to apply before admittance, and why?

Sorry, I take high school in an non-English speaking country and I have little information.

Thank You!

For the universities I know of, the residence application deadline is much later than decisions, so I would wait …

thanks starsaligned… any other opinions?

It really depends on the universities. University of Toronto, for example, requires that you submit your housing preferences at the same time as you apply. You are allowed to change your first choice until you are admitted.

Happysunshine is correct about U of T. If you do not indicate your housing preferences at the time of application, you will be at a serious disadvantage for housing and you will likely be placed on a waitlist until all who indicated they wished housing are accomodated. Then if spots are left, it’s usually done by a lottery system. I would not be surprised if this is also the case at other Canadian universities, too. You should contact the schools you’ve applied to ASAP and see what your options are.

Thanks Happysunshine and Alwaysamom! What you mean is that I only have to indicate I want a housing spot in my application? I do not have to actually apply for one yet, right?

Well, it really depends on what residential house you are interested in. Some residential houses require you to write essays while others do not.

@happysunshine

wow, really? I never knew.

^Oh ya. There is at least one residential house that requires 2 essays.

^ my gosh, competition sure is high these days… those must be really gorgeous residence halls.

^Because it offers a maximum of $2,000 scholarship. The sad thing was I didn’t realize it until it was too late.

^ yikes, I wonder if I’m too late. 2000$/year?

^I don’t know. You better call the admissions office at U of T to verify.

^ TY so very much!
