I'm not very good at writing (and I don't enjoy it much either), so given the heavy emphasis on writing that hamilton seems to have, should I not even consider applying? I got a 530 on the writing section of SAT1 the first time I took it (expecting a 600 at least the next time but even then...). Should I even apply?

There are a few answers to that question. First off, there are few white collar careers that don’t involve some form of writing or presentation if you want to advance at all. Even STEM majors have to make presentations and write reports in the real world, so I’d highly advise you master the skill. You don’t have to love it, but you do need to learn to tolerate it.

Hamilton would be very good at helping you master the skill. If you love everything else about the school, I’d consider applying, but before you accept their offer, if you get one, know what they ask as far as writing goes, or you may have a less than ideal time. Other colleges may let you dodge the writing stuff a little more easily, but doing that won’t serve you well and you’ll still have to take some no matter where you go.

Consider giving it a shot. Learning to write better (and even quickly) will not be as hard as you imagine it to be.

Btw, skisee, I did not intend to imply that you are a fearful person. Fear here is simply a metaphor for your concerns. FDR said it in more modern language: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
