Should I apply my senior year to get into a better school?

I am a junior currently. I haven’t taken the MCAT yet, and I think I want to take it in August so that I’m prepared. I also haven’t even written my personal statement. I have a 3.69 GPA that might move to a 3.7 after this semester is over. During my undergraduate career, I have done research, 100+ hours shadowing, 100+ hours clinical volunteering, and 50+ non-clinical. I want to get into a good school, because I’ve heard it matters where you go, but with these stats I most likely would be rejected from the school I want to go to. Should I settle for any school and not have an extra year off?

My classes next year will be pretty easy so I’m positive my GPA will be more than a 3.7 by then. I could improve my ECs as well, because unfortunately I don’t have as many hours put in as many other people do.

If you got ALL A’s next year, what would your cum and science GPA’s be?

Which US MD med schools aren’t “good schools”?? They’re all very good.

How does it matter where you go?

What is your home state?

Are you at Univ of Miami?

If you aren’t taking the MCAT until August, you won’t get your score back until Sept. That’s awfully late in the cycle to start an application. (IIs start going out as early as mid-August and most med schools have rolling admissions.)

Wait until next year and do a good job on your application.

BTW, you need more community service/non-clinical volunteering. Work on that next year too.

Don’t even need to read the rest. You’re already far enough behind for this cycle that you’re putting getting in ANYWHERE in jeopardy.

the others are right. Taking the MCAT in August would be too late for this cycle. I missed reading that earlier.

What is the rush to take the Mcat ? You should prepare very hard for it. Get a high score in the first take is more important than rush into it, after you have completed the pre-req. and if you don’t have enough ECs take a gap year. Good luck.
