should i apply to the business program or not?

I am a white female, HS senior, 31 act, 32 super-scored---although I understand that u of i does not take that into consideration---3.75 uw and 4.4 w, and am 100% positive that I am going to attend u of i (pending my acceptance, of course). The issue is, I really do not know what I want to study.

Should I first apply to the Business program, as it is one of the most competitive? Do I have a fair shot of getting in?

If I do not get into business program, is it possible to switch to communications before I attend or would I have to stick it out in DGS for a year before I could then transfer?

Thanks in advance!

You have a good shot at getting into the CoB. Essays are important there too. Apply by Nov 1st for a slight edge. You will need to wait a year to transfer to Communications from DGS.

thanks for your response. If i do get accepted to the business program but decide that I would rather study under a different major like journalism, could I switch before attending uiuc in the fall?

No, and you don’t apply to Business per se, but to a specific program within the college such as Accountancy, or Finance.

Actually, unlike for other UIUC colleges, for the business college you do apply to the college per se and not to any particular major; the only “major” choice on the application form for business is “business unassigned.”

If you apply to the school of business and are not accepted what happens is that you are then considered for admission to another college which is usually the Division of General Studies so if you go that route it is unlikely you would be considered for communications if rejected by business. Moreover, if admitted to any program, the earliest you can request a change to a different college or major is during the middle of second semester freshman year for a change starting sophomore year.

Thanks for the correction Drusba. Does that mean that you need to compete for admittance to a particular program during Spring term of your freshman year? Do you have any stats on rejection to the various programs within business? Average GPA of acceptance would be nice to know.

They don’t make you choose a major in COB until the end of your Sophomore year. I don’t think that there is any rejection to the majors, but I could be wrong on that.

You don’t officially declare a business major before junior year but students usually start heading in the direction of a particular major by sophomore year. You do not go through any new acceptance process for choice of major and you can choose which one you want although sometimes a counselor will encourage or discourage one major or another depending on the individual.

With those #'s, I think you have a very good chance of acceptance.
