Hello, I'm a Junior in high school who is hoping to be admitted to U of I business, or more specifically accounting. Recently, one of my dad's friend who majored in accounting at U of I told me that it is to your advantage if you apply to the school as undecided first, and then transfer to business once you get in there. He told me that U of I business is getting more competitive, and transferring after being admitted would be much easier. I was wondering if this is true? And also, how hard is it to get in U of I business without going in there undecided and transferring? If there is anyone who know about this, please feel free to reply THANK YOU!

Apply to College of Business first. If you don’t get in, you automatically go into the Ucandidate pile of candidates.

Good luck.

You should not assume it is to your advantage to apply undecided, meaning to the Division of General Studies (DGS) and then try to transfer to businees. When applying to business for freshman entry, you do not choose a major (those are chosen after first or second year). Entry into the business college is highly competivie, admission rate for freshman in last few years has been less than 40% and many who apply are rejected and offered instead the alternative for admission to DGS or to economics in the Arts & Sciences college…

However, trying to transfer into business from DGS or any other college at UIUC is also very competitive. You get one chance to transfer, at end of first year into second. Decisions are made after second semester freshman grades come out. The transfer rate of admisson to the business college is less than 50%, which may sound better than the 40% noted above but that 50% transfer rate is from a pool of applicants who all have high GPAs the first year of college; you should assume you need about a 3.5% or higher to have any decent chance.

The problem you face is that if you really want a business degree then it is usually best to apply as a freshman and if rejected you can go to another ujniversity to which you apply and get admitted as a freshman and start in business. Realistically, that is better than applying for DGS and attending UIUC and then after a year get rejected as a transfer to business, leaving you no option except to try to transfer to another university, which can also be a risky affair if your freshman grades are not stellar.

Thank you so much for your posts, i will definitely apply for business first. But i was wondering, what would 3.67 UW gpa and 30 act give me as for the chances of getting in u of i business??

I got in with a 3.6 UW and 32 ACT w.o much ec’s so you have a good shot.

It puts you in the middle 50% range but guarantees nothing. Business is one college that considers essays and ECs very important and it has been known to reject 4.0s with 36 ACTs.

All depends on your ECs. I got in with similar stats, but with tons of ECs and leadership, as well as work experience.

I just got in (year of 2015) with a 3.4 UW GPA and 31 ACT so you should be fine. I’m planning to double major in Finance and Accounting just so you know.
