should I apply?

Hi i'm a senior from Alaska
I'm planning on engineering, and really want to go to a SUNY. So far I've applied to Binghamton and Buffalo. A huge factor for me is money, cause my parents don't make that much and they don't want to pay for my college expenses, and want me to go to wherever is the cheapest.

Can you guys tell me if Stony Brook is generous with scholarships and grants?

My ACT : 34 english 32 math 31 reading 24 science (30 composite)
AP CHem-5 AP History-4
Varsity letters in swimming and cross country skiing
School choir accompanist (pianist)
all state solo vocals
National Honors Society

How much would I end up paying?

So far, I can go to:

University of Alabama (full tuition scholarship + $2500 a year)
University of Alaska Fairbanks (probabaly the cheapest for me)
University of NEw Mexico (tons of scholarships, but I've read some bad reviews about the school)

Is it stupid of me to even consider a SUNY with my stats and expect merit aid?

should I apply? it's sooo expensive it's $50 for an application i've already spent $100 on just Binghamton and Buffalo)

Oh and also I've heard that people only hang out with their own ethnicity people? is that true? I am Asian and it'd be weird if I couldn't really socialize with caucasians. Growing up in a small town in Alaska, I've only hung out with caucasians (friends, teachers, girlfriend you get the picture)

hi, we’re from NY…and out of those three schools…SBU gave the most scholarship $$ I am not too sure tho with your stats about scholarships. And probably you would make friends with a lot of different people not based on ethnicity. Also, what major are you considering?

IS SBU Stony Brook? I am majoring in engineering.

oh and should I retake the ACT? I don’t know if they’ll accept test scores from Febrauary(that’s the next one)

SBU = Stony Brook Univ…have you been to NY before? you need to also consider travel costs…I am not sure about the ACT because my child only took the SAT…if you are really serious about coming to NY…then I would invest the $50 and apply to stony brook as well. Also, alot of students go home on the weekends, not to say all of them, but I don’t think it’s as much a residential college as say Binghamton. my kid lives there and mostly stays there every weekend…he usually only comes home about 2 weekends out of the semester, (not counting thanksgiving)…And I don’t think its a big party school, but I am not sure about that.
