A little background information. I am in my junior year of college. I am white and live in Idaho. I attended a community college for my first two years due to finances and had a 4.0. My current GPA is 3.6, which is where it will be if I apply this year. I am taking the MCAT July 2nd, and expect to score a 30+. I have volunteered roughly 75 hours at a local clinic, which includes checking patients in and updating patient charts. I have shadowed a general surgeon for 7 hours and a family practice doctor for 30 hours. My family started a non-profit organization to raise money for breast cancer, and I had a helping hand in that. I do not have any research. I will have two letters of recommendation from professors and one from my boss. I have worked as a Supervisor for UPS for 4 years. I know it is not medically related, but I thought maybe it would show good leadership? If I do score a 30+ on the MCAT, would it still be worth applying? I plan to submit my AMCAS application opening day with one school to have it verified, then add schools after receiving MCAT score. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

It’s hard to predict what your MCAT score will look like in advance. No matter how many practice exams you do and how hard you study, there are always surprises.

Your ECs are bit on the light side. You might consider doing more clinic volunteering and some additional community service.

Are your letters from professors at your college or from the community college? Is there any way you can get a third letter from a professor if you need it? I specifically ask about a third LOR from a professor because sometimes medical schools will have very strict requirements about what they want and will not consider your application complete if you don’t meet all of their specific requirements. You can find those requirements either on each school’s admission website or in MSAR (which should be available at your college’s library or career office).

The boss’s letter is a good idea, but not all schools will accept it. Again, you will need to check each school’s policies.

The early submission is good idea, but I’m not sure if the delay in getting your score will hurt you or not. Perhaps others can address that.

Since ID doesn’t have its own med school, you’ll be eligible at UDub under WWAMI, but you may also want to go WICHE’s PSEP and see if you’re eligible to apply to other states thru that program.

Thanks for the info. I know my EC are pretty light. Most of my free time was spend at work to make money to live off of because I don’t have wealthy parents. I have been trying to get more EC, but don’t think I will have to many more by the time I plan on applying.
