Should I attend the Stella Adler Summer Conservatory in NY or LA?

Should I attend the Stella Adler Studio's summer conservatory?
I am currently studying at a university, pursuing degrees in Drama and Film.

I just want to make sure that this will not be money down the drain ($3,500 for tuition).

I know that back when Stella was alive, this school was extraordinary. Has it lost it's sparkle?

Is the school reputable?

Do you think that the summer conservatory will benefit me?

I also noticed no audition is required for admission and many summer programs require it so that worries me a little. Is that a bad thing?

-Is the LA or NY location "better"? I live on the East Coast, so NY is more convenient. But housing is so expensive.

Is there any difference between the LA and NY summer conservatory because I noticed that the website names are different. LA's is "Studio of Acting" and NY "Stella Adler's Studio of Acting" plus I read somewhere that they're not associated. I just want to ensure I do not end up at the wrong place.

Any other thoughts, experiences, or opinions on the Stella Adler Studio are welcome.

Thanks.

My daughter attended a summer teen conservatory and had a great experience. It continues to be studio within NYU. I don’t really know anything about the LA studio but from what I hear the NY Stella Adler is still regarded in the top handful of acting studios in NYC.

Thank you for the input! Did they offer housing?

My son’s friend is currently at Stella Adler in LA and LOVES it. It is the same program as the NYC with much of the same faculty - they fly back and forth. IT is as ActingDad says, a highly reputable program. The cons are that it doesn’t lead to a degree so you spent two or three years in the program (two for most, with an optional third for some work like camera work), and spend around $15,000/year on tuition but it doesn’t go to a degree. So that would be up to you and your finances.

As far as the difference between the two, well, the two biggest differences are housing costs/living environment, and access.

LA is more film based, NYC more theatre based. But of course NYC has plenty of film opportunities and LA has theatre opportunities. Really, in my opinion, it would boil down to where you’d prefer to live and what you’d like to be doing after you graduate.

As to housing – Stella Adler does not have or offer any of its own housing. My daughter had considered doing a program like Stella Adler instead of the BFA and one of the downsides in addition to the lack of a degree was that you were pretty much on your own when it came to things like house.

Where are you currently at university? Is going to the Stella Adler summer conservatory going to teach you something you can’t learn at the university you are currently attending? Will adding this conservatory to your resume really give you a better chance of reaching your career goals?

I believe Stella Adler is still one of the best acting studios in the world. But maybe you should really think about going there full-time during the year. Since many of their other programs DO require auditions, I wonder if this summer program is perhaps for less serious people, and a way for the Studio to make some more money to support their more serious programs. (Are you sure that the particular summer program you are looking at does not require an audition?)

@connections Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.
@ActingDad yeah, i contacted them and they basically advice some options but do not offer housing itself but thank you.

@TheRealKEVP I am currently in a university in Puerto Rico. I do believe I will probably learn things at Stella Adler that I won’t be able to learn here. Of course, adding this conservatory in my resume doesn’t hurt. I contacted them as well to know if they required me to audition and they replied saying that there is not an audition component to applying only an interview is needed. I find it odd that they do not require an audition.
I don’t plan to enroll full-year because all I really want is an opportunity to learn and gain more experience during the summer and not waste it and I am completely serious about this plus the fact that there is no degree and no housing is a bummer. Since many of their programs do require an audition it struck me as odd. It worries me because as I stated before I just want to make sure that this will not be money down the drain.

If you know of any other summer programs or internships feel free to share.

Thank you for you input.

Why do you feel you need a degree, Acrids?

KEVP

[Stella Adler, LA](http://www.stellaadler-la.com/hollywood-acting-school-la/stella-adler-los-angeles/welcome.php) is definitely reputable, but check to make sure they have an actual summer conservatory. I think you might be getting confused looking at the New York site. [The Art of Acting Studio](http://www.artofactingstudio.com) is the official West Coast extension of the New York studio. They have a summer conservatory, but it’s exclusively for the NYU/Tisch kids. Actually, if I wanted to study Stella’s approach in LA, I’d probably go to [Marjorie Ballentine](http://marjorieballentine.com).

Ah! I just bothered to look at the website I linked and it looks like the summer program at Art of Acting is no longer exclusively for Tisch students. It used to be.

A couple of other summer programs in New York you might want to look into are the ones at [Michael Howard Studios](http://www.michaelhowardstudios.com/Michael_Howard_Studios/Summer_Conservatory.html) and the [William Esper Studio.](http://esperstudio.com/?page_id=58)

In LA, there really aren’t any other reputable one-stop-shop type places that I know about other than the Adler programs.

@TheRealKEVP that question has never popped into my mind, I wasn’t looking at the bigger picture so thank you for that.

Thank you for the responses and the other programs you suggested fishbowlfreshman.
