So far I've been accepted to USF, New College of Florida, FGCU, and Cornell University. I'm still waiting on UF's response. I originally wanted to go to Cornell because I love it and it's top ranked in the country but I can't go due to financial concerns :( I visited New College and hated the atmosphere even though it's one of the best schools in FL. Anyways, I'm getting really impatient with UF. So now it's between USF and FGCU. I know that USF is a better school overall and both schools offer a medical technology/biology degree (I plan to double major; I'm a prevet student). The thing is USF offered me a bunch of loans. I visited campus and I liked it. FGCU, on the other hand gave me a full ride basically. I'm afraid if I go to FGCU though I won't get into vet school. If any current students can tell me why I should prefer USF over FGCU, that would help me a lot. Money is a big issue for me; I want the best education possible (It's a bad combination I know). I'm trying to be in less debt so I'll owe less money when I get my ph.D and honestly veterinarians don't have the best of salaries, but it's a career that I would love!

I’ve attended FGCU and loved it but then again I liked it because i dont live far from there (1 hr drive) but I recently put in for USF and still waiting. I dont want to go back to FGCU because I didn’t like the professors there but thats my opinion and I dont have any friends there any more. I know people who live in tampa and who go to USF so thats is another reason why I’m going to try and go up there if I can. I’d go with whoever would u give u the most out of financial aid. I know FGCU is a tad bit cheaper than USF but its your choice on to which school you will attend. FGCU isn’t a bad school overall I just didn’t like the professors for my degree. Good luck with whichever school you go to. :)

I visited FGCU and also liked the campus, it looks brand new! I have a few friends that go there. I’m just worried about academic prestige and how I’ll be judged upon that. What was your major if you don’t mind me asking? USF is in Tampa, which is a fun city. I liked it better than Fort Myers. And thank you, good luck to you too :)

Yeah Tampa is way better than Fort Myers imo, and I hear the FGCU doesn’t have really ANY academic prestige. So I’d say USF because of that, Tampa, and I feel you’d get a better education at USF.

I’m sold on USF; I’ve been at USF 3 years and love it. I’ve visited FGCU for different events a few times and personally the location and campus don’t appeal to me. The campus is removed from most anything stuck way out east of I-75 out in the everglades. I don’t doubt one can get a sound education at FGCU and I’ve got friends attending the school who like it, it’s just not for me. USF is a more established major metro research university with more and better resources than FGCU. If the money difference to attend USF over FGCU isn’t overly burdensome, opt for USF…Go Bulls!

I went to FGCU for one semester for Computer Science, but I wanted to finished my AS and Certificate degree at a community college first to see if I would get a job with that but things with the economy turned up bad so I this is why I’m looking into going to USF for the Fall. This time I’ll be studying Computer IT so that all my credits will transfer over and only have to be 2 yrs of school vs a full 4.
FGCU is failrly new. They’ve built several housing units within the last 5 yrs since I’ve been there. Yes Ft. Myers do suck lol. There isn’t a whole lot of things to do whereas Tampa has everything right there. That and because my BF lives right down the street from the school is why I really want to get in and go to USF this fall. :)

As much as I would like to go to USF, they offered me 9,000 in loans. I think that’s ridiculous for undergrad. Anyhow, if I go get my b.s. in med technology isn’t there a huge shortage and I’ll get a job asap? I know that being a doctor right now sounds completely unrealistic if I go to FGCU. But, once I finish my b.s. degree I’ll transfer out and double major in Bio at a more prestigious university, hoping that will get me into a good grad school. Then I will be able to work and make at least 65 k a year and go to school. any thoughts?

^ Do you live in a Florida metro area where you could commute to a nearby state university and save money living at home instead of going away to a college and having the extra living expenses. Maybe that’s a good realistic option for you.

no lizard, i live in the middle of nowhere close to no universities. it sucks! i was really ****ed to turn my dream school down because of finances

lavender, you know your situation better than anyone. If you can get a “full ride basically” at FGCU and going to any other school is not affordable for you, go to FGCU. FGCU has the resources you need to succeed: go there and dig in, get involved, study hard, find research opportunities and expand your academic horizons. Go to FGCU with the right attitude; don’t pout that you can’t go to whatever other school, and get on with your life. Dreaming isn’t going to get you in vet school; working hard at a university which you can afford like FGCU can. Good luck!

thanks lizard! I’m just hanging in there because I’m still waiting on UF’s decision and it may be worth it.

If you got into Cornell you’ll get into UF, and that’s probably where I’d attend if I were you.

I’m getting a degree in Homeland Security online right now because I couldn’t drive to the city for a campus college. Will that effect if I get into USF, and would the conversion to Criminology as a bachelors be a good fit? I have a GPA of 3.50.

My cousin went here in 2007, and she lovedloved it.

Opinions? Help.

I’m not sure. UF has strict guidelines when it comes to prereqs. I don’t have one prereq and it’s not offered on my campus during the summer, so I guess we’ll see if they accept me or not.

FGCU has no academic prestige! It is a “university”, but the professors are not up to par and I, personally, and applying for USF. I live in Fort Myers, and FGCU is not anything to write home about.

I agree mnyawn… I live in Cape Coral and FGCU isnt something to brag about so thats why i wanted to go to USF :)

I have visited both FGCU and UF before USF and honestly, UF is in the middle of a tiny, crap town. The campus may be pretty and all, but the town outside of it is miserable. People who have come to visit their friends at USF during the school year (during breaks and such) have all told stories of how “UF wasn’t worth it” for several reasons. I have friends who attend FGCU who want to transfer to USF because “a) their professors suck, b) their community and clubs suck, c) the town around it sucks, or d) the lack of IT and technology the school is equipped with in general.”

I don’t know for sure to what extent a, b, or d are true because my time at FGCU was limited. I’m sure everyone can come up with at least one thing they dislike about their school, but when 15 - 30 people from each school have said the same, I’d be a bit more lenient to believe them.

Okay, I never said FGCU was prestigious. It’s just affordable for me. Anyhow, people may insist USF isn’t prestigious depending on whose standards you’re talking about. By no means am I dissing USF or any Florida schools, but it seems as though none of the schools are really respected in Florida out of state besides UF, UM, and New College of Florida. Luckily, I got selected for a scholarship to Cornell and I think that’s the best choice for me. I am going to take advantage of all the benefits!
