Should I avoid writing about a single extracurricular for multiple essays?

Hi everyone,

I've got a question relating to some feedback I've been given regarding my college essays. I have a few extracurriculars, but one that really shines (it might be a hook, though I'm not sure the precise use of that term) and to which there's a lot of depth to. Thus, I feel like I'm not repeating myself when I talk about it in different essays; rather, my gut feeling is that it's kind of like variations on a theme.

However, a person peer-reviewing my essays told me to not mention the same extracurricular in more than one essay. Should I go with his advice, or should I just keep my essays the way they are now (two on the same topic - one supplement and one general common app essay)? Is there a limit as to how many times I should mention the same activity (even if I'm not repeating myself in its details)? For reference, she said my essays were great - this was her only complaint besides spelling/grammatical errors.

Thanks for the help - I understand I'm being a bit unclear here so if any more information would help then feel free to ask.

Bump - any help here would be much appreciated.

You can write several outstanding essays that focus on one event or activity that you have participated in, but all of my advice sources (guidance counselors, teachers, etc) have all mentioned variety in the essays. Adcoms want each piece of writing to show them a side of yourself that they have not already read about or seen elsewhere in your application.

However, since the other “essay” is a supplement and not one of the main essays, I would assume that it’s fine as long the topic is really significant in your life and you do not repeat the same main idea in both of the essays. (:

You may want to speak to an adult who knows more about admissions, though.
