I've heard from quite a few people at school that the English Lit SAT II is difficult. I'm taking it on May 2.

Currently, I'm a junior in English Lang. My teacher sucks but I have an A and recieve A's on papers and 8/9's on in-classed timed essays. On my first SAT I I got a 640 in Critical Reading. Compared to all you geniuses I know that's low but I know I'm capable of getting it in the 700s by my last SAT II run (probably October, maybe December). I recieved a 720 on SAT I Writing and an 11 on my essay.

So, whaddya think?

Also, I bough Kaplan's 2008-2009 prep book. Any thoughts on that?

Well, the lit SAT II has nothing to do with SAT writing or AP essay writing. It’s similar to CR, but you read more advanced passages. I believe the question style is also a little different. If you haven’t started prepping yet and your CR skills are currently at the 640 mark, you’ll probably have a tough time.

I took January Lit and did decently well but no where near my sat CR score (790). I love CR and I prepped a lot for the SAT II lit and still thought it was an incredibly rigorous and challenging test, I highly recommend that you get the “real SAT II” book, take a spark notes practice test (timed!), or get Barrons, Princeton, or Kaplan SAT II lit and get prepping! the test is on very advanced and sometimes convoluted passages that are in a much older (think Shakespeare!) style, lots of poetry. the good news is that the curve is amazing! but it requires alot of prep and skill to master. Good luck!

I hope it’s not as hard as everyone says either…

I did one at the veryyy beginning of this year out of the SAT II book and got a 660 so I’m hoping I’ll get a 700+ when I take it at the end of this year after AP Lang and doing some practice tests.

Good luck! I’m sure with some practice, you’ll be fine.

I did no practice and got a 700, so I don’t think it’s as hard as some people say. I also got a 690 on critical reading, so there was either a harsh curve on the SAT I or a great curve on the SAT II, haha.

However, my strengths lie in English/Writing. If you are stronger in other areas, I would do some prep. Overall, the test wasn’t THAT hard, but it will definitely give you a splitting headache.

Holy crap. I’m not expecting this to be easy or anything, but as long as I don’t zone out and practice well enough hopefully I can make at least a 700. My strongest subject by far is English/Writing, so hopefully you’re right blairb91.

Only 1% of test takers get an 800. Considering only students with very good reading skills are taking the test, that means there’s a lot of competition for a relatively small number of good scores.

To add another anecdotal data point–800 CR / 800 Lit with concentrated but not extensive prep for each. (As you might guess, I’m going to be an English major.) I found AP Lang’s information on rhetorical strategies and syntax/diction to be helpful. Lit prep consisted of doing all Kaplan’s review chapters + 2 practice tests.
