Should I consider Mizzou?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior from South Dakota and I don't know whether or not I should consider Mizzou? I'm considering Iowa, Minnesota, Marquette, KU, OU, and UNL, and i just dont know if Mizzou compares to them?

Is the campus nice at Mizzou? and how is their political science program?

thanks for the help,

Based on your list, I think Mizzou is a place you might want to apply.

Son’s top choice is Marquette, but as we looked at costs, we thought we should find something that would be an academic safety, and that wouldn’t put us into major debt, either.

Although we have yet to be on the campus, and have been discouraged by many outsiders that it is probably a big sports/Greek school, I have found through this forum and perusing college guides, that there are people there from all over, because of their journalism school, and that there are a large number of student organizations and active off campus life as well.

It does have an airport, although the flights are expensive, but at least you don’t have to drive two hours to Saint Louis to catch a plane, but you can if you want.

As for the application, it is not bad at all. Believe me, after ruling out a lot of schools simply because was not willing to spend the hours on essays and tracking down teacher recs for schools we could either no way afford or son was really not interested in, it has been a pleasure filling out the Mizzou apps.

Now, the MyZou site is tricky, but their IT department is open late, and they have been very helpful if I’ve had trouble. I just called the financial aid office today because of a problem updating the scholarship app, and they were very helpful in walking me through it.

Really easy to deal with, very helpful staff. Only reason I’ve had computer problems with apps is because I don’t know how to use Windows. Seriously. I learned to type on a typewriter and would still use it today if I could.

As far as poly sci, don’t know anything, as son is interested in biomedical engineering, but there are a large number of majors, and that is a big reason why we chose to apply as well. If son decides to change his major, there are lots of others to choose from, and we won’t have broken the bank for him to explore his interests.

Thanks a lot…if you guys go visit Mizzou tell me how it goes!

I am not familiar with the other schools you’re interested in, but here are a few comments from a Mizzou parent:

 1. There is easy, frequent bus transportation (MO-X) from Columbia to the Kansas City and St. Louis airports. And since many students have cars, it’s often possible to catch a ride with a friend. The Columbia airport is tiny, flights are limited, planes are small, and airfare is expensive. It’s better to go to one of the major airports, where fares and schedules are much better. It is a two-hour drive either way. We flew into Columbia once, and the total travel time with the plane change in Memphis was actually longer (and more of a pain) than flying to St. Louis and driving.
 2. Greek life is visible, but not overwhelming. I don’t know the percentages, but I’m sure you could look them up on the Mizzou website. You don’t feel left out there if you don’t pledge (or at least my son does not). Maybe a current student could post with more information. Or search this forum, because there have been threads in the past.
 3. There is tremendous school spirit at Mizzou, and there are many traditions, some of which go back more than a century (the university was founded in the late 1830s). Mizzou students love their sports teams, and game days are fun and exciting. The MU-KU rivalry is very serious, so don’t even ask how the two schools compare!
 4. The campus is very nice, especially in spring and fall. It’s designated as a botanical garden, so that gives you some idea.

Hi - We visited from Pennsylvania this past June and my Daughter fell in love w/ Columbia. It really is a great area and I feel the town fits her well. She is a suburban kid who loves the city and Columbia has the feel of both. It’s got a nice little downtown area that makes you feel like your in a downtown type area (obviously not big city) while still keeping that suburban feel to it. Plenty of places within walking distance and I believe someone said the bus is only 50 cents to go to places like the mall, walmart etc.
Everyone was extremely friendly - Daughter’s first comment was how nice everyone was. The campus was so nice, big enough to get lost, small enough to feel at home.

I have taken a look at the Political Science website because my Daughter is going to double major in either History or Political Science. Go on the schools website and type political science in the search box. The department has their own website on the College of Arts and Science website.
