I am having second thoughts about declaring my current major on the commonapp…
I always intended on majoring in Biology, but I believe I do not fit the requirements for this specific program…
Would it be bad if I declared my major as English even if my guidance counselor may have indicated that I wanted to major in Biology in my letter of recommendation? I don’t know what to do, please help!
@Lindagaf So should I still put down I want to major in Biology on the commonapp even if my GPA is low and most likely my recommenders may have indicated I want to major in Biology?
It depends on the school. If biology is an impacted major at the school you are applying to and you don’t have the requirements for it, it may be difficult to switch into it when you there. At other schools, you can major in anything you want and you don’t have to decide until sophomore year.
Since one of your recommenders said that you intend to study Biology, then you should just stick with Biology as your major of choice. Your application needs to be seamless. If there are disparities within it then the admissions officers might look at your application more critically. You can always change your major once you get into your school.
Is your concern that you might not be accepted to the school at all if you don’t meet the requirements for the bio major and that is why you are thinking about English? Can you ask the recommender if they actually did speak about your declaring a bio major? Maybe they just said you enjoy bio classes. If you aren’t accepted into the major program you ask for, can you still be accepted to the school, which goes back to my first question.
Yes, that is my main concern. For one of my applications I applied as a History Major with a minor in Biology, is that alright? I thought it would still exemplify my interest in Science if I put down a Biology minor as well…
