I got accepted into the scholars program, and was wondering if doing the program will help when applying to medical school. Is the extra work worth it when I go to apply to medical school?

If you are actively involved in the Scholars program, make the effort to get a meaningful internship as part of your Scholars requirements as a sophomore, and get awesome grades, it will show that you entered undergrad with the desire to do more than just attend classes. As far as the extra work, I would suggest that you participate in the Scholars program because you really want to do it, not that it would look good on a med school application. You should plan to do as meaningful research and/or related internships throughout your undergrad time.

Is that true, astro’mom, that an internship is required as a sophomore in the program? I think that’s great if so. My d will likely enter UMD scholars in the fall and this is the first I’d heard of that.
To the op, certainly I think the program would help a bit with Med school apps, and help you stand a part from other UMD grads in the same pool w/o honors or scholars on their diploma.

The scholars program does not have an internship requirement… how can they force all students to get an internship? It’s highly suggested and that’s a good thing. Overall, the scholars program is nothing amazing because you really don’t learn stuff. It would be more useful if you decide to double major or minor in something that you thing would you would like! I’m considering ditching the program.

PS: there is no extra work in scholars except for a colloquium. However, the colloquium is annoying because its a really LONG class, and my schedule would be a lot more smooth if I did not have to take colloquium.
