Should I do pre med at Georgetown?

Hi everyone,
I have recently been accepted into Georgetown’s School of Nursing and Health Studies with a concentration in Global Health and planning to take the pre-med track as well. I love Georgetown so much but idk if it’s worth going there over an “easier” option like UMD College Park (if I get in). FA is not a problem.

Only 40 or 50 students in the world are accepted to your major at Georgetown. It’s not going to be easy there or UMD. Go to Georgetown and help solve some big problems we have in the world. You can do it.

Would you prefer to be at Georgetown or at UMD if you change your mind about pre-med? That is what you should consider. Many would-be pre-meds change direction once they have settled in at their college/university.

Go to Georgetown if that’s the school you like. Im a premed student at Georgetown. My friends in Global health all love their classes.

The premed is hard, but nobody is trying to weed you out. Study, learn the material, and you will be fine. It’s amazing how many of my peers quit at the first sign of adversity and blame their bad grades on their professor. I have made very high grades thus far and I still have a legit social life like everyone else.

Good to know. My DS trying to decide from several good options. He is under the impression that GT is all about law and government. I think he is wrong

There is definitely a stronger focus on Law and Gov. However, the fact that the premed program is smaller makes it stand out. Getting into labs for research and letter of recommendations is not as much of an issue as it would be in bigger schools. Also, none of the intro bio/chem classes are graded on a bell curve; the grade you get on the exam is what you get. You are in total control of your grades.

@brownpoodle what other schools is your daughter considering?

@Savage101 UNC, UVA, UND, BC, JHU, Bucknell, Villanova, W&M

All good options. Johns hopkins is rumored for being ‘cutthroat’- with so many premeds, I heard there is a lot of competition there.

Bucknell and Villanova are good schools, but I feel like the premed there might be a little weak because there is no hospital affiliated with the campus and probably less medical research opportunities. Georgetown students definitely have some great opportunities doing research and volunteering at the hospital.

UNC and UVA are both great state schools.

Honestly don’t base your decision off of my input alone. They are all legit schools where your DS can launch a strong career from.

@Savage101 Thanks a lot for your input! Will definitely take that to consideration.

@Savage101 and @brownpoodle, my sister goes to Bucknell and it is affiliated with a major hospital (Geisinger) and there are a lot of research opportunities: https://www.bucknell.edu/BGRI

@RFM1617 @Savage101 I went to Bucknell! Loved it. Many moons ago! They do have access to Geisinger but not as convenient as GT access I’m sure. I would love for my kid to attend Bucknell. I’m not sure he wants to go where “Mom” went lol! His dad went to W&M which we liked also

Late to the discussion. DS is facing a similar decision, pre-med plus maybe a cs minor, at Georgetown vs WashU vs UC Berkeley. Would appreciate any feedback.

He is admitted to Georgetown College. We visited during GAAP weekend and loved it. Very impressed with biology program, security focus in Comp Sci, access to faculty and undergraduate research, student orgs especially GERMS. He even got to pet Jack and posed a picture with him. So cool.

As to pre-med programs at GT, how successfully is it in preparing students for medical school application? Does the pre-med advising ‘weed’ out lots of people before they even get to the application process? Since there is a medical school onsite, I’d expect it’s not an issue for pre-med students to shadow physicians, do research etc. Is that correct?

How about the Early Assurance Program to GT medical school? It sounds promising but none of the students we met on the student panels or spoke with during GAAP got into medical school through the program. Wonder why that is the case. Is it harder for GT students to get into its own medical school than to some other places?

Keep hearing WashU has very good pre-med programs too. Just not sure how to evaluate the programs from different schools.

Thanks in advance.

This is a great topic especially since my DD21 will be visiting GT soon and also considering PreMed/Chem/Engineering… I’ve been very concerned about the doom issues though.
