Should I do TAP for UCLA Transfer?

Does TAP really help your chances of getting in?

I currently have a 4.0 at a California CC, and I don't anticipate it going any lower than 3.8. I'm wondering if I should complete the necessary 5 honors courses at my college to become TAP Certified, or stay the course and maintain a high gpa and get involved with a few EC's.

I'm considering these majors - Philosophy, History, or Political Science.
Also, not all of the preparation requirements are available at my school for some of these majors. For example, Philosophy requires 4 courses, and 3 of them are not articulated according to assist.org - will this have a negative impact on my application?

TAP will pretty much gaurantee your acceptance with a 3.5 or above, but a 4.0 will get you in even without tap, it's your call. I did TAP and I thought the honors classes were really easy.

so you can go to a cc with no tap program or whatever, get great grades, and still get into ucla as a transfer?

Yeah, but TAP does help alot, especially if your going into an impacted major like business or communications. But you might as well do TAP if you can, it's really easy. A 3.5 with TAP is equal to a 3.8 without TAP.

Communications department does not recognize the tap program and each applicant is hand picked by the FACULTY so it is one of the most competitive majors to get into. If you have a 4.0, you have a great chance at being admitted into UCLA as long as you finish all your major preps and IGETC is always a plus

Do TAP. Why wouldn't you? It's just an extra plus that your application will have. You never know - being part of the TAP program could make the difference.

The reason I'm even debating this is because most honors classes are offered during the daytime, and I go to school in the evening (I work). I need to apply by Fall 06, and I will not be TAP certified in time - I'm more focused on completing the lower division major requirements for History. I would hate to wait a year to apply just to make sure I complete the honors program, unless it would make a significant difference on my acceptance.

I am, however, taking an honors english course next semester. Does UCLA see this as a positive if I take an honors course here or there? Or is it pointless unless I actually do TAP?

Thanks for all of the responses so far...

It certainly wouldn't hurt. You will probably like your honors class anyway. I have enjoyed mine - the students just seem much more into the whole idea of actually doing their reading and studying :)

do all community colleges have the tap option? if not, does diablo valley college has the this tap program?

Not all community colleges offer TAP; if your college doesn't offer it see what type of transfer programs they do offer. You can check their website, visit a counselor, or go to the transfer center.

well what if i didnt do tap and i get like a 3.5 gpa anthro major. and what if i try to do tap but dont manage to finish it.

bumpity bump

i did tap with a 3.57 GPA (that was my GPA when i applied in the fall) and i never ended up finishing it. I still got into UCLA.

my ccc didn't have tap so I had to apply without it. Still got in tho. My gpa wasn't anything spectacular either (3.68).

I did TAP and got certified and got rejected. You MUST complete the prereqs and that will strengthen your chances.
