So I attend a CCC and have some honors units. To be TAP certified, I need 15 more honors units which translates to roughly about 5 classes. I will be a second semester freshman. My problem is that my major is impacted and not eligible for TAP and I do not desire to have an alternate major. Wouldn't this render TAP useless? I mean, obviously it would look better if I took honors classes but for the most part the higher acceptance rate through TAP won't take affect since my major is impacted.

In other words:
Should I risk lower grades by taking honors classes and getting TAP certified even though my major won't be affected? If I just take my IGETC classes and Major Prereqs non-honors I am sure I can get a 3.9. If I were to take the remaining honors units I predict a 3.5-3.7 most likely.

Would you really get lower grades in honors classes?

The general consensus is that TAP is almost a guarantee for non-impacted majors when all prereqs are complete, and helps a lot even for impacted majors.

I, however, am one of those who it didn’t help. I had a 3.95 among my most recent 61 units at CCC, but some old units from an OOS four-year dropped my cumulative GPA to 3.35. I had TAP, all Political Science prerequisites completed, killer major-related work experience, and an awesome essay. UCLA rejected me, Cal accepted me for Spring.

Anyway, to answer your question directly, if you really will get lower grades in honors classes and you’re applying for an impacted major, just get as high a GPA as you can. A 3.9 without TAP is better than a 3.5 with TAP.

“My problem is that my major is impacted and not eligible for TAP”

The priority admissions you get through TAP does count towards your first choice major, even if it is impacted. They just say your alternate can’t be impacted, but your first choice can be impacted.

Most of that honors credits can be fulfilled by taking other course like bio, chem, calculus, etc(at least that is how my CC does it). You already have some honors credit, some will be fulfilled if you take physics, chem or calc(specific courses will change per school I’m sure). Given that, then you only have to take 2-3 courses depending on class. In my case I took calc1 and calc2 and they counted. That would be 10units right there, although my school just goes by the number of classes instead of units.

Also, if you are a 3.9 kind of student, honors courses is not much of a risk at all. Honors classes usually mean an extra essay, or project. It isn’t much. I took intro to anthro, int. relations poli sci, and world music. All honors, all just as much work as other classes, I didn’t even notice a difference really.

I don’t know why I did all the work though, I’m not even going to UCLA lol. But anyway, I say go for it endphase.
