Hi! I am a senior that is taking an Intro to Engineering Class that I wish to drop at semester. (I really can’t stand the teacher and the class is way to much work for what it is) My current plan to TA for my AP CS teacher instead. Do you think that it would look bad to colleges if I drop the class?
I am in three AP classes, AP Calculus AB (B) , AP Psychics (A), and AP Computer Science (A), band, health, and Adv. ELA. 3.9 unweighted GPA. The main colleges that I’m looking at are Drake, Hendrix, and Grinnell. I have been accepted into Drake and Hendrix. Won’t hear back from Grinnell till the Spring. Do you think that any of these schools would care? (Especially Hendrix and Drake)
Thanks!
This can be a good swap. You aren’t going to be majoring in engineering in college. If asked about this, you can report that the class confirmed that you aren’t interested in engineering. The TA position can be a very good experience for you.
Have a good spring semester!
I think it’s fine too.
My D emailed her admissions adviser a few years back and asked if it was ok to drop a class. Just get it in writing so it won’t be an issue. They will see that you dropped the class once you send in your transcripts, so better to be up front.
I don’t think it will matter but:
- For colleges you have been accepted at you should email the admissions officer and confirm that the schedule change will not impact you acceptance. Get an answer in writing.
- For colleges you are waiting to hear from you should email the admissions officer and advise him/her of the change to your schedule.
- Keep records.
For the courses you put on the app, projected for next semester, you do need to inform them, not wait for them to find it’s missing. (Imagine the chaos if lots of kids report strenuous plans, get admits, then surprise adcoms when those courses aren’t on the spring transcript.)
“You aren’t going to be majoring in engineering in college” Does look like you may have stem intentions and while I don’t think dropping this particular class is an issue (it’s not college engineering, at many hs it’s not significant,) you want to be sure you have the right alannce of courses and that adcoms weren’t in any way counting on you to follow through with this one.
