Right now I am a senior in high school and I’m currently taking AP calc. But after taking two quizzes (which I spent a lot of time studying for) I now have a 58 average. Right now I’m considering dropping to CP (college prep) calculus, and I have till this Thursday to make a decision.
My friends think this is a no-brainer and I should just drop/ because this could really tank my GPA(if I withdraw it doesn’t show on my transcript). But I feel very conflicted because I want to major in business/ econ, and I know usually for these majors calculus would be very helpful.
I also know that colleges want to see a progression in your classes. I’m taking 4 AP classes this year(including calc) and I took three last year. But I dropped from AP lang to honors English because I already got credit for the AP test, and if I drop AP calc, I’m afraid colleges will think I’m taking it easy senior year.
Drop to CP calc and figure out where your learning gaps are from Pre-calc/ trig last year during whatever school looked like during covid. Then you will be ready for Calc and statistics in college.
Which AP Calc are you taking? Are you enjoying the class? At my kids school many students start off rough in their AP Calc, Chemistry etc. careers and manage to bring up their grades by the end of the semester. Have you gone to your teacher’s office hours to figure out what you’re missing? I would not be so fast in dropping the class before you run some diagnostics. It’s nice that your school offers a college prep Calc class but I’m interested in knowing if you feel like you can pull up your grades.
You don’t want to fail a class - and you’ll get into a great college with college-prep calculus. You can ask your teacher about tutoring and you can figure out can you get the class up to a B - but there is no point staying in a class only to get a C, D, or worse.
Not sure what colleges you are looking at but for 98% of them, this won’t matter.
Not sure why it won’t let you edit anymore - I should add even if the course would matter (i.e. you’re applying to the tippy top of schools), it won’t matter because you’d get a grade that would impact your chances.
Too many kids push too hard. Learn the fundamentals - you’ll likely take in college again anyway.
My daughter got an A in AP Calc, for some reason bombed the test so is taking calc again in college and it’s fine…except she dropped it after a horrid first test. Better you truly learn it…and if it takes time, it’s ok.
