Should I drop out of Pre-Calculus?

Hi, I’m a junior in high school, and I’m taking Pre-Calculus Honors. On the first two tests I got D’s, a 61% and a 62%. I took one test today, and I’m pretty confident that I did well. I think I could raise my quarter grade to a C. I’m really struggling in this class though. Before the tests I would go over practice problems, all of the homework and the questions I missed, and important concepts. I studied so much, but I still barely passed the tests. I don’t think I should stay in the class.

If I drop out I can take Advanced Math Topics which is an honors class as well. The problem is I’m afraid of what colleges will think when they see that I dropped out of Pre-Calculus. I’m almost done with quarter 1, so I’m thinking about dropping out before quarter 2 starts. I know for sure that I can get A’s in AMT.

The colleges I am considering are UF, FSU, and UCF. Do you think it would be better for me to stay in the class with C’s, possibly a D; or switch out, but they see that I dropped out of the class? Does it really look that bad if I switch out? Which would be preferred by the colleges? I don’t think I can handle Pre-Calculus. I want to know if I’ll still be accepted even if they saw I dropped out on my transcripts.

Well what would you replace pre-calc with? That’s important to know before we recommend anything.

@bodangles I saw that, but what is in that class as well as after? How would the math “path” change?

@MPC6789 I’m thinking AP Statistics or retaking Pre-Calculus senior year

Although you may become more mathematically mature by senior year, the material will be 99% the same as it is this year. I would take the other class, but know that everything will most likely be the same by senior year.

You’re not getting into UF/FSU/UCF with a D. Take ADM and ask your teacher at the end of the year if you’re ready for precalculus. You don’t have to take Precalc Honors, you can just take regular precalc.
