Should I drop out?

I am currently an art college student- almost done with freshman year. (I am working on my finalls right now :frowning: )
So what I’m concerned about is, whether should I drop out from this school or not.
I am a pretty good student; I receive good amount of scholarship, about 60-70% of tuition (it is just for merit scholarship- I receive this by my portfolio). My grade is pretty good, and I work hard on all of my classes. I also love to draw & paint.
However, I do NOT think this school & all the courses worth tons of $$$; (even though I receive scholarship, my school is private art school, so it still costs a LOT. + all the materials & programs are super expensive) I basically work & learn by myself. I feel like education in here is just waste of money.
Also, since in high school, I’ve always wanted to study broadly. I am interested in various liberal art courses. But it is impossible in my school, because most of the courses are art-related and there are lots of limitations.
Next problem is, which is my main concern, I am not sure about my future. Usually, it is hard to find job & make money in art industry (just to make sure- I did not choose art major to make tons of money. I came here bc I like art), but it costs a lot to get education & degree in college. Which is really… ironic.
So, I want to drop out from this college and restart in community college(to earn some transfer credit; I am pretty sure none of my classes in my school will transfer) and then transfer to public school.
My question is: Is it too late?? I am almost done with my freshman year and if I want to transfer to non-art-related major in public school (ex. UC), I will have to attend CC to prepare and then transfer.

It is totally not too late. Sounds like you’ve given it a lot of thought, and you learned a lot at your present school; you learned what you don’t want to do, and about smarter ways to do what you want to do. Finish off the year, be grateful for the time you had to focus on your art, and go explore at community college. Good luck.

Agreed with the above ^^^ You have very good reasons for transferring, and a game plan to do so. Many people do what you’re planning to do – so go for it, and good luck.

PS Don’t call it “dropping out.” It will give your parents a heart attack (smile.) It’s a transfer to a cheaper option that will give you greater academic opportunities.

I agree with the two posts above. It is definitely not too late. It is precisely the right time. I would not call it “dropping out” either. It is transferring in order to pursue a more appropriate major.

Changing major and exploring other majors is VERY common, and sounds entirely appropriate in this case. In this case you need to change schools to do so.

@“jesse’sgirl” @katliamom @DadTwoGirls Thank you so much  I hope I can persuade my parents tho… :frowning: thanks anyway!

You are certainly welcome. One thing that is probably obvious but I neglected to include in my response: IMHO you should finish the current semester (the one that finishes in a few weeks) and keep your grades up for the next few weeks (and always). As long at you are in a university or college, you should try to do well.

Are you an international student?

@“aunt bea” nope I am permanent resident and will be able to apply for citizenship soon

The reason I ask is that your written language skills will need some improvement. Don’t let this dissuade you from continuing your education. You need to know that your written language can impact grades in your coursework. Use the tutors at the CC you hope to attend.

Well, I do not care about all the grammar stuff in here… of course when I’m writing essay or any paper I always put more effort.

“… and will be able to apply for citizenship soon”

Congratulations!

“…I hope I can persuade my parents tho…”

I would think that the first point is “I would like to switch to a different major instead of art”. They should be aware that art is a tough way to make a living. If they are fine with this part, then “I therefore need to change schools” seems to follow pretty easily.
