I am a White Male with no real intense or difficult background, I am very lucky. Both my parents have doctorates and are clinical psychologists who own their own business (just the two of them) and work together. My older brother attends Assumption College (MA) and is majoring in Psychology, I wish to break away from the "family business" and work on my own future. I fear my grades and scores are nowhere near high enough for what i need, even though I KNOW I am a better student then what my grades portray. I was in a bad state of mind through freshman and sophomore and did next to nothing as far as academic work. I feel if i apply myself i can be successful in any school environment, no matter the difficulty. Please help me decide on what I should do, and whether I should "give up" on some of these college aspirations.

I am also open to other college options if they are open to me, if anyone has any suggestions please say so.

P.S. Do you have any ideas for a club or group for which i could attempt to create, not only for leadership recognition, but maybe an animal-based one in which i could enjoy? Creativity is welcomed.

Bump…please help me I’m in serious need

Bump…

The upward trend will help, but many of the schools on your list will be basically unrealistic with a 3.0… Make sure you have a backup plan (safeties). Also coming from your background will hurt you, there is no excuse for the grades…

Any ideas on which ones are within reach?

I honestly only know schools that I would consider unrealistic well enough (so I can’t really help with the realistic part). Those would be Tufts, Holy Cross, Boston University, Northeastern, UNC Chapel Hill, and Trinity. Know that not all schools will recognize grandparents attending as making you a legacy and you need to check the various colleges’ individual policies. Also you should look for schools who do not look at your grades freshman year.

My brother got into trinity with the same SATs as me (1800) and the same gpa (3.0), he wrote a very strong essay. At our school we have a page on Naviance.com, which uses the scores and gpas of students from our school who have been accepted at the schools in which they have applied across the country, and BU is definitely obtainable, I am at the moment within the (from what it looks like) approved numbers for acceptance. The latter schools I would agree seem out of reach, I am still waiting to see how my SATs turn out, maybe I will surprise myself with some high scores. But if you/anyone have any college suggestions that weren’t mentioned above please help!!

bumpity bump bump

Bumppppp…

Boston College: Reach
Tufts: Low reach
Holy Cross (MA): Reach
Boston University: Reach
UC Santa Barbara: Match
UFL:Match
Loyola Marymount(CA): Low reach
UMiami: match
Northeastern: low reach
UNC Chapel Hill: high reach
San Diego State: low match
UTampa, and Trinity (MA: match

Add a few safeties, and don’t give up on applying. Get those senior scores up, don’t apply anywhere ED so you can send in A’s on that senior year transcript. Make sure recs show your academic promise that’s not reflected in your grades. Please chance back at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1508050-chances-science-undergrad-new-post.html

How is BU more of a reach than tufts even with the legacy?

I think neuromajor may be quite off in listing Tufts as “low reach”, even with the legacy (which may not be considered as such, since it’s a grandparent? Tufts admissions reps are very helpful in answering all questions.)

If anything, Tufts is the hardest on your list to get into. They were most difficult of the MA schools for the kids in my D’s school to get into this year; many more got into BC, BU, and (in previous years) CHC and Northeastern with lower scores/ grades. The upward trend in your grades bodes well, but you also might want to up the ECs in one or two of your favorite areas, which seem to be golf and veterinary medicine.

So, for the MA schools…

Tufts: reach/ high reach
BU: high match/ low reach
BC: high match/ low reach
CHC: high match/ low reach
Northeaster: match/ high match

Also, do you mean Trinity in CT?

Thank you guys a lot, and yes I did mean trinity in CT my bad. This I really helping my perspective because I had been hearing from another person on this that all of these are out of reach, but to head more say they are possible gives me some hope so thanks again!

You have to realize that your list is not very balanced though. Reaches are called reaches for a reason, they are unlikely, you have a lot of reaches and no safeties. Try and create a more reasonable list between now and when you apply.

By the way I got my SAT scores back, I have an 1850 now: 590 reading 620 math and 640 writing. And I know I can get them all up if I study for the next one

Okay if you can chance me on these, I would think of these as my safeties: eckerd(FL), Stetson(FL), Rollins(FL), Umass Amherst (maybe), and high point(NC), and if anyone has any perspective on florida colleges I would love to hear it because I’m really looking into going either florida, California, south/north Carolina, or Massachusetts

Also any ideas on Furman University in SC. As well as Clemson (SC), and Another reach: Tulane(Louisiana)

im selfish bumppp

I think it depends on your golf ability at this point. What is your handicap/ state ranking/ number of tournaments you have won?

I like to think I’m a solid golfer, I am planning on practicing a lot this summer, something I never really have done. But so far I average about 3-6 over par, which is not great, but I know when I start practicing I will get it to just over-under par (hopefully). I placed 5th in an all-cape cod tournament for the top highschool golfers, with a total of 123 through 27 holes, winner havin a 118. I know I can win it this year, as well as planning on getting into a few legitamate tournaments this summer
