Should I even apply?

Should I even apply? Does Middlebury give good financial aid packages?

4.14 Weighted GPA (highest GPA in school is 4.54)
3.5 Unweighted GPA (highest GPA in school is 4.0)

SAT: 670 CR 760 M 790 W = 2220 (single sitting) and 710 CR 760 M 790 = 2260 (Superscore)

AP: 5's in Calc AB, Micro, Macro and a 3 in AP US

I have no academic awards and no Sat iis, but I have good focused extracurriculars (such as varsity basketball) and essays, and I take the toughest courseload offered at my school.

Hester -

Why did you take AP exams and no SAT IIs? Aren't SAT IIs typically a precursor to AP exams? They were for my son (Class of 2012 at Middlebury). He took 5 SAT IIs and 10 AP exams. I believe that 7 or 8 of those AP exams were taken after he took the SAT IIs.

It seems logical that you should have taken the SAT IIs in US History and Math Level I. But I have no idea how the Middlebury admissions folks will view it.

Of course your regular SAT results look pretty good.

^I don't know. No one ever told me to take sat ii's...and I guess that seems like it will hurt me. How are my chances without the sat ii's though?

Master Dad.. I found your reply a little condescending. What's the point of bragging about your current freshman in college's HS record? And the truth? Middlebury doesn't require SAT II's. And frankly, unless a kid is applying to highly selective colleges there'd be absolutely no benefit to taking SATII's. And AP's are good for some schools, all fives required to get credit at some and at others? No credit for AP whatever the scores. and if you're going to apply to Middlebury and use SAT II's... It'd probably be more valuable to take Math II over Math I.

As Quoted from Middlebury's website. Please note the word 'OR'

"Candidates must submit standardized tests and may select from a menu of three different test options. The requirement may be met by submitting either the ACT; or the SAT I administered on or after March 12, 2005; or three SAT II exams in different areas of study."

PS Hester... I think your scores are solid, as are your grades. Now don't forget that you'll need that graded analytical paper... and good luck! And if you really did take all those AP exams, you should be a AP Scholar.. maybe? I'd have to double check.

Yes, I'm an AP scholar with honor but didn't post that because I didn't think it was a major accomplishment. Its good to see that I have a chance at getting admitted.

It is an academic award. You said you had none. You absolutely do.

Modadunn -

I didn't mean to appear condescending....sorry.

But don't you think Middlebury gets a ton of applications from kids who have taken SAT IIs?

FYI, I referenced SAT Math Level I as that is consistent with AP Calc AB.

Master.. absolutely because most of those kids are applying to highly selectives across the board. But for those who are reaching for Middlebury or who decide, hey.. maybe I have a shot wouldn't have had to in order to merely apply.

Frankly, I think the analytical essay is harder to come up with. My son's current teacher does all his grading via computer so his marks and comments are merely in red. I don't know if he even kept papers from last year as he pares down regularly and surely at year end. I am thinking he should ask his teacher for a personal note to go along with the paper to further legitimize it.

I already have my analytical essay.

You have an excellent chance of being accepted! congrats on your hard work.

^Thanks. Unfortunately all my hard work went toward the SAT and not school.

Master Dad,
I would say that the Math Level 1 is way below Calc AB level. I think as long as you've done PreCalculus you should be fine taking Math Level 2.

I would consider it rather redundant and waste of money to take an SAT II in a subject that you've already received a good AP score in...

Not so vermont. No school who requires SAT II's will accept an AP score as the equiv. or replacement.

but I would think it more effective to do well on an SAT II in a subject for which you haven't already received an a good AP score in order to show versatility.

Hester, you don't need SAT IIs. Just send in your SAT 1 and you are set.

That sounds a little like bunk, vermont. As far as I have ascertained, you don't send AP scores until you are looking for credit for course work. I could be wrong, but the only thing S had sent to another school who required it was his SAT and SATII scores (send one, send all). It is a different request form to send AP's.

APs are a whole other level of difficulty above SAT IIs. If you got a 5 on the AP, I don't think it's that a big deal if you don't take the SAT II for that subject.

There's a spot on the common app for AP scores, but as I understand it this just shows a level of commitment above the norm or required. But I still dont find it redundant.
