Should I even bother applying to Columbia?

So, I'm applying to a lot of schools, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm being too ambitious.

The only real thing I have going for me is that I am a URM (Under-represented minority)
My SAT score is a 2120
I'm taking the subject tests in december
GPA is a 3.97
and my extracurriculars are pretty average; the biggest thing I did was volunteer at a hospital and work in the histology lab for 2 months....

Do you think that if I write a great essay that I could have a chance at Columbia. it's probably the toughest school I'm applying to (acceptance rate wise).

Opinions?

You should apply. If you are average that is not good, but your GPA is very good and your SAT puts you in the range, make sure your essays and recommendations make you stand out.

That’s reachable but what’s your backup plan?

Oh, I have a couple of backup schools.
UGA, UMiami, NYU.
Will be applying to Emory, Cornell and UNC as well, and I hope to at least get into Emory and UNC.

Duke is probably my other reach school =/

As for UNC: if you’re in-state for it, you have a much better chance, otherwise it’s the same level of reachiness as Duke or Columbia.

You have a decent chance. I would definitely say apply. You don’t want to regret it. Plus your SAT (albeit a little low) and GPA are both in the range for Columbia.

And a histology lab sounds interesting. I suggest you write about that…
