Hi, I would like to think that I'm a highly motivated student who would be a great addition to Mcintire. Unfortunately my High school record was average as well as my SAT (1100), this is mainly due to the fact that I rarely applied myself in HS and had no ambitions of going to college; the only reason I took the sat was as a backup plan proposed by my parents and I could have done a LOT better had I actually prepared or tried on the test. Not only that I'm applying from OOS at a UNC system school so that only hurts my chances.

The good news is that by the time I will be applying for admission I should have all recommended coursework completed with a cumulative GPA of around 3.8(it's an estimate and may be closer to 3.9) and a 4.0 in my business/stats classes. I think of myself as a more than adequate writer, as do my comp professors, and I believe I could write some really great essays explaining my high school record and other negative aspects of my application. I should also at the time of my application have a couple leadership positions in school organizations such as pre-law and BLaw society, and I also plan on doing some volunteer work over the summer as well as some my sophomore year.

Now, I'm not looking for any guarantee here I know that I'm at a major disadvantage due to several factors but I desperately want to get into UVA. I think that I would love the atmosphere and the chance to go to one of the best business schools in the nation, if not the world. However, if my chances are not good then I would rather put most of my effort into getting into UNC/Kenan Flagler or maybe another business school that I would have a better chance of admission to.

So if anyone knows, I would appreciate honest opinions on what my chances are with these stats and what I could do to improve my application, if anything. I appreciate all who took the time to read this and thanks in advance!

How are you "highly motivated" but you rarely applied yourself in high school? That's just counter-intuitive.

If you had taken the time to read this thread you would realize I was referring to my college record, and current attitude. Not everyone "gets" life at an early age and I have obviously learned my lesson.

Now, if you aren't going to post anything constructive why don't you go somewhere else. I'm pretty sure the title of the thread isn't "post here if you are a condescending ass"

umm, well i dont' know if you're instate or oos. needless to say, if you're OOS i think you're going to have next to no chance of getting into UVa with an 1100 SAT. Instate, you'll have a very slim chance.

However, if you do get into UVa, the slate is clean, and getting into McIntire is based entirely on how you do at UVa. Good Luck!

Also, I don't think you make it clear at all that you are transfering in your first post.

But since you're transfering, it depends where you're transferring from (if its a VA community college, you auto get in with a 3.7 i think to UVa). I don't really know how difficult it is to transfer into mcintire, but i'm sure you'll be in the running.

Like Jags said, we need more info:
OOS or IS?
What year in college are you right now?
What college are you in?
High school GPA?
Cum college GPA?

We all may be able to help you a lot more if you provide us with this info... =)

Yeah sorry about that I should have made it a list as most of the information you guys requested is in there you just have to wade through the wall of text :D

OOS
transferring from a UNC system school(Western Carolina University if it makes a difference)
I'm a current freshman applying for Junior admission into Mcintire
HS GPA around a 3.2 I really don't remember it's been 2 years
Cum college GPA is an estimate but I'm guessing it will be around 3.8+ at the time I apply

You're college GPA will matter much more than your high school record if you apply for Junior status. However, applying to McIntire is tough (3.7+ is average for outside transfers). Being OOS is even tougher. Having a bad high school record makes it even more worse. I would still apply, just because your college record plays heavily into your decision. But you're deifnently not a shoo-in, and its going to take some good essays to explain your HS record. Keep up the college GPA, write excellent essays, and apply. Its worth the shot, you never know.

Take the SAT again.

Since you cant change what has been done, focus on what you can do from now on. Try to find a reputable internship that can improve your application, do well in your classes, and explicate your desire to go to McIntire.

Also if McIntire is what you want most, you should apply even if you think your chances are slim. UNC business is also a very good alternative, good luck.

thanks for the advice guys, I suppose I will apply given that Mcintire is my number one choice even if my chances are slim.

Any other business schools similarly rank that I would have a decent chance at?

it doesn't matter about SATs if you show how hard you work it doesn't matter. SATs don't mean anything, it matters who you know, and your transcript. I applied ED to UVa and my SATs are just a little higher and i got deferred while people with much higher SATs got rejected. So all the people who think SATs are the biggest deal, your wrong!
