At first, I was thinking about applying to Rice Engineering, but now I'm thinking about changing my mind just because I don't even think I'll make it because of my subject test scores.
These are my subject test scores

I'm actually ranked one of the top in my Chemistry class, the only reason why I didn't do so well is because my school's science department isn't amazingly strong. There highest level of Chemistry is regular Chemistry. My other classmates who also took it with me didn't even break a 600.

Looking at past records, almost nobody from my school has ever applied to Rice before. Additionally, I'm also Asian-American which means it will probably be even harder.

I know Rice pays a lot of attention to subject test scores so would these scores automatically opt me out as a candidate?

Absolutely still apply. Rice isn’t going to criticize you for one bad test score. They look at your application comprehensively. If you’re passionate and you think you have something unique to offer to Rice, you’re just as qualified as any other applicant.

If you happened to take the ACT then you would not necessarily have to submit any subject tests. Did you only take the SAT? Totally agree with wallaceicy06 though… you should still apply it is an absolutely wonderful school.

Interestingly enough, I’ve never met anyone who has gotten in without applying.

And yet, there are many people who have gotten in with a low subject test score.
Why not take another subject test or subject an ACT instead? My scores were almost the exact same as yours (except with Lit and World History) so I took Math II and will send that one instead if I choose to submit both SAT and ACT.

Rice does not allow score choice, so you’ll have to send in ALL subject scores. However, one bad score won’t kill your application. Do try to find another test you could take… My son applied two years ago regular decision. He sent in Math II (790), Physics (750) and Chemistry (640). He got in and he’s LOVING Rice experience!!!

SAT and two Subject Tests, or ACT with the writing test. All examination scores must be sent directly to Rice from the testing agency. If you choose to take two SAT subject tests, we recommend choosing subjects related to your proposed area of study.
