Should I even try? Depressed.

I calculated my gpa for fresh, soph, junior, and first semester senior years and i have an Unweighted GPA of 3.58 so...i guess thats a 3.5. :(
I heard thats too low for ANY ivy.

Should I even apply to any ivies? My dream school is Columbia.

My "hooks" - Just a very general list

African American
IB student
2300 SAT
Top 5 %
lots of EC's (president/founder model UN, many officer positions)
Lots of Comm service (150+ hours)

You DEFINITELY have a good shot at Columbia. Apply ED... that'll help.

Definitely try for them. But it's also crucial that you find other schools that you will be hopefully just as happy at with a better shot at acceptance.

wait, how does a 3.58 round to a 3.5?? Do colleges always round down on gpa's?? And don't you usually show your gpa up to the hundredths digit?

Damn a 3.5 and you are in the top 5%?? urgh I wish I went to your school!
But you should definitly apply...everything looks great except GPA, plus u r a URM. Schools of this calibare tend to reject a lot of perfect applicant, so I think having a lower than usual GPA might even be something that stands out to them, if that even makes any sense haha.

So yea definitly apply to them..you never know unless you apply.

What area of the country are you from?

Thanks so much for your fast responses guys :).

Yea haha, my school is pretty large high school in a VERY rural area. I can see cows roaming outside of 5th period cal i'm dead serious.I live in Spring texas.

Texas is better than New England! (in terms of chances)

Great hooks, go for it.

if you are in the top 5%, that matters more than GPA

some schools are simply naturally harder to get A's in, and college admissions knows that.

Somebody in the Columbia forum got in with 3.3 uw. He applied ED but did take a gap year. There is hope for you. Nice SAT score!

wow great shot...nice SAT scores. i think you'll get in, maybe even harvard.
