Should I even try? Or will it not be worth it?

I am looking into Villanova University. It says on the website that a 3.00/4.00 GPA is recommended for admission.

My high school GPA: 2.3
SAT Scores: 1230 with writing section
College GPA: 3.1
I also need to write an essay, and I want to write about why I did not do well in high school.

Do I even have any chances of getting into this college?

How do you get a 1230 with all 3 sections?

Villanova’s Middle 50% of first year students…

SAT Critical Reading: … 580 - 680
SAT Math: …620 - 710
SAT Writing…(Not reported)

* 61% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher

 • 22% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
 • 12% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
 • 3% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
 • 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
 • 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49

If your SAT is for all three sections, that suggests that you scored in the 400s for each section. As you can see, you are well below the mid 50s of students at Villanova.

Your GPA is also too low. For a student to get accepted with that low of GPA, you’d need to be a needed athlete or something like that.

Villanova is expensive. Will your parents pay the $50k+ per year for you to go to any school that you’d get into?

If not, how much will they pay. Your stats and your budget will largely determine where you can go to school.

A 2.3 high school GPA nearly eliminates you from the applicant pool. According to College Board, about 1% of the admitted student body had a GPA below 2.5 for high school. So it’s very unlikely… but you can still apply if you really really want to get in. I don’t know how college GPA factors in, but the high school GPA is what’s most likely to cause you to be denied.

My community college GPA is 3.1. I will be applying as a transfer student.

How many credits will you have ***completed ***when you apply?

Will your parents pay the $50k+ that it costs? Transfer students don’t often get very good financial aid.

I think that anyone should apply to any school they want to. Honestly the worst you can get is a rejection letter and you lose $50. But admission can be the most random of things so you never know unless you try! No, neither your stats nor GPA match up. Explain this in your essay? Absolutely. As a transfer you’ll increase your chances but I’d refrain from sending that SAT score… If you have the money go for it. And even if you dont, and Nova’s your dream school? Take out loans, work, do whatever to make it happen.
