I have a GPA of 4.1 (3.9 unweighted) and made a 2000 on the SAT. I'm sure this would get me some money at UGA or Auburn, but I'm not sure about GT... does anyone have info?

Georgia Tech has several forms of merit aid. See [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Financial Aid :: Scholarships](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid)

With that said, based only on your test scores and GPA, you would be an average accepted student at Tech. UGA merit aid is mainly in the form of the Foundation Fellowship, Ramsey Scholarship, and Charter Scholarship, and these are all highly competitive and typically go to people with ~1500 (M+CR only) SAT scores, a near perfect GPA, and some form of extra-curricular involvement that made them stand out.

You will be provided with financial aid information before you have to make your decision on schools, but I would advise you to not assume you will get merit aid anywhere unless you meet criteria for an automatic scholarship based on tests scores and GPA. Auburn has such scholarships: [Office of University Scholarships - Auburn University](Office of University Scholarships | Auburn University) However, UGA and Tech do not.

I doubt you’ll see much merit aid from Tech for those scores. As mentioned, they’re average for Tech. However, you should probably look outside of the school for some scholarship money. There are millions of dollars worth of scholarships that go unawarded every year.

I was a national merit scholar and all Tech offered me was $2k a year. I’m not aware of any general merit aid money besides PSP unless you’re a minority (e.g., Goizueta scholarship for hispanics).

Edit: InPursuit’s got it covered.

There are a small number of departmental scholarships. The College of Management offers:

"Approximately fifteen Dean’s Scholarships will be distributed to Business Administration freshmen. These four-year scholarships range from $1,000 to $7,500 per year. The scholarships are in addition to the Hope Scholarship in-state students receive.

Approximately ten Faculty Merit scholarships will be distributed to Business Administration freshmen. These four-year scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,000 per year. The scholarships are in addition to any other scholarship, and to the Hope Scholarship in-state students receive."

You have to travel to campus to interview. No idea how many interview, so hard to know what your chances are. Because of the Hope Scholarship, there isn’t as much money for other merit aid, especially for OOS. Since cost of attendance is $38K per year, the impact of the scholarships is small. I don’t see many opportunities for OOS waivers, either.

Yeah merit aid for OOS is slim. You have to be pretty stellar to get those

There are actually quite a few merit scnolarships for OOS. You don’t know they exist unless you get one.

When do you hear about the OOS scholarships? I can’t spend $$$ to fly to Atlanta and not receive one of the scholarships (not cost effective!) If I knew there were other scholarships that might stack with the COM scholarship, it would make it a wiser investment. Anywhere to look that would give specifics? It’s one thing to write an essay or interview locally, but airfare, rental car, hotel, etc., add up fast especially if you don’t know whether you have a 50-50 chance or a a 1 in 1000 chance. Everyone at GT is very nice, but it’s a hard choice!

Does anyone know if there are grants awarded to OOS based on need? Specifically, if parents can meet EFC but there is still ~ $9000 gap between EFC and cost of attendance, what does GA Tech usually do? Should I anticipate loans for the total gap? Would work study be awarded?

As far as I know, the PSP is the only scholarship that requires you to interview in Atlanta. The rest are awarded based on your freshman application or an application that you file for the scholarship. If you are a minority, check with OMED. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for your financial aid award packet to see if any scholarships were awarded. Remember: you can always look at outside scholarships that will follow you regardless of college.

COM Dean’s Scholarship Semi-Finalists have already been notified. Faculty Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists will be announced at a later date, and they do require an on-campus evaluation.

Many other departments award Dean’s and other merit scholarships that do not require an interview.

OOS grants are awarded and they can be quite generous (10K+). Since these are grants and not scholarships, I assume they are awarded based on need. Work study and federal loans are often included in financial aid packages, but I believe work study is usually reserved for those coming from lower income backgrounds, since GT receives federal subsidy to help pay for these students’ on-campus positions.

As I said, you will be notified of your financial aid package before you have to make an admissions decision, and you cannot control what GT awards you. Focus your efforts on external sources of aid.

I am a COM Dean’s Scholarship semi-finalist and we are required to come to campus to interview. Any idea how many of us there are?

I honestly cannot answer that question, but I would assume it is fewer than 100. You could contact the COM with your questions though. I understand your concern about flying to Atlanta and potentially not getting a scholarship, but you could also be missing out on thousands of dollars in scholarship money and if you are seriously considering Tech this will also be a chance to visit campus before making your decision. How far away do you live?

Texas. COM is very nice, but I know they cannot tell me “You are likely to get the top amount.” Most of the scholarships are around $1K-2K a year. OOS tuition is $38K so spending $1K for air, rental car, a couple of nights in a hotel, meals, etc., is risky. I have visited campus, so that alone is not reason to go. Thanks for the insight.

It should not cost $1000 to visit. A round trip ticket for 1 person is ~$300, you would not need more than one night in hotel (if that depending on the timing of the event and whether you can get a same-day departure), and you do not need a rental car because you can take MARTA from the Airport to Tech for $2 a trip. At least some of the meals are provided by the COM as part of the event. I’m sure the COM could also find you a current Dean’s Scholar to stay with to save money on a hotel as well.

Assuming it cost you $500 to come and you only received $1000/yr that is an 800% return. So, it’s not exactly the riskiest thing to do. If you end up attending Tech, you will also be making that same flight probably a few times a year, so this shouldn’t be viewed as some abnormal inconvenience. However, if you contact the COM with your concerns, they may be wiling to work something out for you. It’s worth a try.
