Should I feel bad for spending the summer away from home?

At some point it becomes impossible to take family vacations together. We have settled for getting as many together as possible. Sometimes the youngest benefits when the oldest ones have left home, but OTOH, the older ones had experiences before the younger one came along, so it all evens out.

Do the internship. Those kinds of opportunities are part of why you go to college. Your parents will have to adjust to accommodate your brother, and that’s the case this summer or next, or four years from now when you are in grad school or working in the real world.

Our older S hasn’t been home for the summer since he left for college. He has had great experiences and I don’t begrudge him not being home. Doesn’t mean I don’t miss him, but it’s time for him to test his wings. I miss the help with yard work, and we miss him on vacation and camping trips, but this is part of the transition parents make as their chicks leave the nest.
