I got an email from Minnesota saying I should fill out their Housing Application. Should I fill this out even though I'm not ready to enroll there. I'm still waiting to hear from other schools.

Its really up to you, if you are seriously considering the U of MN, then its only $25 to get a spot and the earlier you apply the better chance you have at getting your number one dorm choice.

Is the $25 refundable if you don't enroll at Minnesota?

i don't belive so. but it's only $25

i'm in the same position as you i was accepted but i'm still waiting to see where else i get in so i haven't commited.

i am, however, filling out the housing application just to be on the safe side. I'd rather lose $25 than have my master plan go awry and end up at UMinn with no place to stay

I want to fill it out, but have no idea about the dorms...what is a definite no no?

Territorial and Frontier are freshmen only, and the rest of the superblock is good. Middlebrook is good if you are going to be in honors or like that kind of feeling. Otherwise I don't know too much.

I think they guarantee freshmen dorms as long as you apply by May 1st. So as long as you're not set on a certain dorm, you should be fine for housing until you decide on your school.

I got a call from the admission office a couple of weeks ago to see how I was doing (whatever that means) and whether there was any question they could answer. I asked her if it was permissible to send my housing application even though I remained undecided about enrolling at the U. Her answer was a firm no - I must accept before I apply for housing. I told her I was willing to forfeit my $25 in case I chose not to attend but her answer was the same.

Based on what I read on this thread, it seems it is allowed.

I am confused and want to call the admission office again and shall report what I find.

^That's weird. I'm not 100% sure about the U and haven't accepted yet, but I submitted my housing app and it went through. Also I remember when I took a tour they told us you could apply before you were even accepted....so I think you just got a weird person.

I'm almost positive that you can apply without accepting enrollment beforehand.

The application process for housing I remember for my son (a dual-enrollment student) from last year was that applying for housing required a student I.D. number, which a person wouldn't have until admitted, I think. (He had an I.D. number from a previous program he attended.) If you have a U of MN student I.D. number, you should be good to go, and may as well apply for housing as soon as you can.

Thanks. I just completed the paper application and it will be mailed tomorrow. (The electronic application did not work as the site was not up.) You think I am unlikely to get into my top two choices for residence halls (Middlebrook and Terrirorial) given the delay in filing my application ?

Yes, you should apply for housing as soon as you are admitted even if you are not sure that you are going to attend the U. You may give up the $25 if you go elsewhere but if you don't send in the deposit and fill out the paperwork until you make up your mind you will run the risk of being put wherever they have space.
