Hi I am a first year poly sci major at uc riverside and i applied to UCI and UCLA. I got a 4.0 first quarter and and a 3.96 second quarter. Due to AP units, and planned summer courses, I meet the junior standing requirement. However, I have not completed my IGETC. I will finish all my prerequisites by summer 2010. Will my lack of prerequisites ruin my chances of getting in?

There’s no telling, but you can be sure not finishing your prereqs is going to hurt you. You’re already the underdog.

do they take into consideration prerequisites completed in the summer? (summer 2010)

Depends on the school, but UCLA is pretty strict about it (as in they do not consider it). I have heard of stories where they gave exceptions, but these particular kids were TAP.

dude, if you don’t have IGETC done, you’ll basically have to spend an extra year and a half at a UC. This is what I’d do. Spend one more semester at a CC, and try to get into UCI during winter session. One semester vs. 1.5 years and a lot of $$$.

some UCs(UCI) do consider summer courses if I’m not mistaken.
your first priority should be IGETC though.

so
courses which overlap between prereqs and IGETC
IGETC
prereqs
FUN

that’s the priority you give to things. Your other hope would be knocking out some high scores on AP tests.

^ He’s at UCR already. This is a UC->UC transfer. :)

ohh in that case, I don’t know jack. Ignore most of everything I’ve said.

I’d still imagine that completing GE would be first priority since GE certification is GE certification, but I could be wrong. I didn’t read carefully, I thought he applied to UCR, UCI and UCLA.

You don’t do IGETC for UC-UC. You do UC-GE Reciprocal or something…

You’re an underdog already. You need those prereqs, and that GPA.

@ izychr yeah. that’s what i meant.

adding to my situation is the fact that i received an email telling from UCLA telling me that in order to be eligible I have to add another course to my spring schedule. so currently i am enrolled in 23 quarter units… my dilemma is whether or not i should a drop a class, giving up my chances at UCLA for this year, or fighting it out and seeing if i can get super lucky this year…

Edit:
UC to UC transfer
Overall GPA: 3.96
Prereqs: 3/4 done. Finishing 1 more in summer 2010.
No uc to uc reciprocity.

Honestly dude, I don’t think your chances are too hot for I/LA. I think there was another guy last year who applied as a UC-UC 1st year with a 3.9 something and was rejected from Davis. You are truely at the bottom of the pool. Considering the UCs got way more applications this year in comparison to last year, I think you might have better luck after one more year.

I would wait one more year at UCR and complete your UC Reciprocity. It will increase your chances (assuming you keep your GPA up) and you will be done with your GEs (avoid a HUGE hassle).

Also you kind of want to prove to UCLA/UCI that you are a stronger applicant compared to your application from hs. Assuming you did not get into UCI or UCLA from hs, they already know about your AP scores. What’s new now is your high GPA from UCR, so that should carry a lot of weight.

thanks for the advice. i really appreciate it.
